The new Pramukh of BAPS who is on three-day visit to city stressed importance of character-building through spiritual values

“My mission is to develop good human beings,” says His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the sixth chief of Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purshottam Swaminarayan
(BAPS) Sanstha.
The successor of spiritual guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj of BAPS, Mahant Swami Maharaj is on three-day visit to city for the first time after becoming chief of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, the world-wide socio-spiritual organisation.

“The process of making good human beings starts from education. Therefore, the education system of Swaminarayan Schools has been developed on three components. Here, academic curriculum comes on third place. Character-building with the help of teaching spiritual values has given first place in curriculum. Sports activities come on the second place and academic course on the third,” Swamiji states.

The foundation of BAPS is based on Vedic scriptures. It was first revealed by Bhagwan Swaminarayan in late 18th century and officially established as socio-spiritual organisation in 1907 by Shastriji Maharaj. Founded on teachings of practical spirituality, BAPS has spread its wings across the world and successfully addressed the spiritual, moral and social challenges and issues faced in the world.

BAPS has always preserved purity of its nature and purpose since its inception. It has been accepted universally because of its humanitarian services.
BAPS has been working across the world. Under the guidance of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, BAPS has constructed over 1,100 temples across the globe. It has more than 3,800 centres which had received many national and international awards and affiliation with the United Nations. Today, a million or more Swaminarayan followers begin their day with puja and meditation, lead upright, honest lives and donate regular hours in serving others. No Alcohol, No Addictions, No Adultery, No Meat, No Impurity of body and mind are their five lifetime vows.

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj became the head of BAPS having 986 saints. His becoming chief of BAPS has been destined and the process of selection as chief was not on the basis of elections.

“According to Aksharbrahma-Parabrahma philosophy, Bhagwan Swaminarayan will remain present in the form of Akshar or the satpurush. The spiritual successors of Swaminarayan have to fulfill the qualities of sadhu mentioned in Vachanamrut. The first chief Gunatitanand Swami was identified by Bhagwan Swaminarayan as Aksharbrahma. In a similar manner, successors were identified by their guru. The guru parampara have provided generations of satsangis with the guidance they need to lead a spiritually fulfilling life that is geared towards spiritual redemption and happiness. None of the successors are elected or voted in by committee or a Board of Trustees. The spiritual and administrative leadership of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is held by a gunateet guru defined by his merits,” he reveals.
