The setting for Rahul Dholakia’s much-awaited Raees is Gujarat of 1980s’. The theatrical trailer of Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release starts off with a magnificent bird’s-eye view of a harbour in the Arabian Sea. Even as we see a flurry of people scrambling to unload the piled up cartons, from the just-docked ship and a liquor bottle rolling across the floor, we hear Shah Rukh Khan vociferously reinforcing his commitment and love for his ‘business’, “Ammi jaan kehti thi... koi dhanda chota ya bada nahi hota.., aur dhande se bada koi dharm nahi hota!” Just as the powerful lines end, the Badshah of Bollywood makes a royal appearance on the screen in a pristine white Pathani, sporting a stunning stubble and his kohl-lined eyes blazing bright. Clutching a bat determinedly, Raees looks menacing enough to bodily harm anyone foolish enough to cross his path.

The ‘King of Romance’ is breaking out of his tried-and-tested mould, and how! Shah Rukh Khan means serious ‘business’ in Raees, even if it is on the wrong side of the law. One can practically hear the smoulder in his deep voice when he drawls, “Jo dhande ke liye sahi, woh sahi. Jo dhande ke liye galat, woh galat... Isse jyada kabhi socha nahi...” Veering sharply from his recent outings which mostly cemented Shah Rukh’s image as the quintessential ‘Dreamboat’; Raees looks raw, rugged and of course, riveting.

Forget the much-talked about clash between Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil and Raees, which incidentally is also releasing on Jan 25, the real face- off to watch out for will be between Raees and ACP Ghulam Patel, played by the hugely-talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

The trailer gives only a hint of the cutting undercurrent between the two formidable foes. As Nawazuddin hands out a not-so-friendly warning to Raees to mend his ways, the ‘Don’s’ ever-smooth rejoinder, “Saboot le aayiye... aur le jaayiye… Raees haazir hai…’ is enough proof that the fight will indeed be a fiery one! Pakistani beauty Mahira also lights up the trailer with her presence, and promises many more gorgeous moments in the film.

In the never-seen before avatar, the Dewaana star promises a brand new and different SRK with Raees. Even the theatrical trailer release of the film was by itself a unique relay event, held simultaneously across 10 cities. The 51-year old star during the launch of Raees’ trailer interacted with fans and scribes in ten different cities through video conferencing. The trailer was launched in as many as 3,500 screen through advanced UFO technology at select Inox screens. The 10 cities that were chosen to hold live interaction with Raees team were Delhi, Indore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Mumbai, Moga and Nagpur. The interaction in Nagpur was held at Inox, Wardhaman Nagar, on Tuesday. Score of enthusiastic members SRK World were also present during the programme.

As the trailer ends with Shah Rukh Khan saying, “Aa raha hun…”, all we can say is, “We can hardly wait”.
