Nagpur is among top 20 clean cities

EVEN though Nagpur city has failed to secure rank in top 10 cleanest cities in the survey carried under ‘Swachh Sarvekshan- 2016’ in the country, but it has been awarded as ‘Top Mover in Western Zone’ for overall improvement in sanitation of urban areas for good work.

The award was presented in a function held at New Delhi on Monday. Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu conferred award to Mayor Pravin Datke, Health Committee Chairman Devendra Mehar, Additional Commissioner Nayana Gunde and Health Officer Dr Pradeep Dasarwar in the function.

First 15 cities which scored more than 70% of the total marks out of 2,000 marks are categorised as Leaders, 20 cities with scores inthe range of 60%-70% are adjudged as Aspiring Leaders, those with scores in the range of 50%-60% are the cities which need to accelerate their efforts and cities which scored below 50% are named Slow Movers and need to work harder to improve sanitation. Nagpur ranked 20th in the list of 73 cities of the country and Categorised as Aspiring Leaders.

Nagpur has improve dits ranking from 60th to 20th due to efforts takenby the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Under the leadership of Mayor Pravin Datke and Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar. Nagpur has improved its ranking by 40 ranks. Union Urban Development Department has selected 75 cities of the country for ‘Swachh Sarvekshan- 2016’.

The survey was conducted last month and results were announced at New Delhi by Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu. 53 cities with a population of above ten lakhs each and 22 state capitals that does not have much population were selected for the survey. Pimpri-Chinchwad and Greater Mumbai were ranked in top 10 cleanest city in terms of sanitation and hygiene.
