Staff Reporter,

The decision regarding making available 102 acres of land at Wathoda for the proposed Skill Development University and Management Centre, is likely to be finalised in general body meeting of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) scheduled on July 20. The said land was first acquired by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and then made available to NMC for sewerage farm. As a result, the land is in possession of NMC. The local body had proposed user change of the said land under Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. Accordingly, the State Government cleared user change. Now, the land will be used for Skill Development University and Management Centre.

A decision in this regard will be taken after discussion in general body meeting of NMC next week. Already, NMC Standing Committee has appointed M/s aXYkno Capital Services to prepare detailed project report on the proposed university. However, prior to finalising the plan, NMC wants discussion to be held on various aspects and to take informed policy decision. Hence, the matter has been listed on agenda for the general body meeting. There are various options available to NMC — NMC should itself create infrastructure for the proposed Skill Development University and Management Centre, opt for private participation, or call for proposal from public sector institute of national or international repute.

Further, NMC is mulling over a proposal to keep the land ownership but make it available on nominal lease for 30 years with a condition for renewal of lease after that. In lieu of this, NMC may ask for keeping 25 per cent of the seats in each course to be run by the proposed University, reserved for students from Nagpur city. There are various other aspects of the project that will come up for discussion during the general body meeting.
