Fight for ‘cycle’ begins; Mulayam meets EC officials

VETERAN founder leader of Samajwadi Party Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was on Sunday dislodged as party president by his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in sort of political coup, on Monday met the Election Commission officials to file his claim before the poll panel for the party’s ‘cycle’ electoral symbol.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was accompanied by his younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, party colleagues -- Amar Singh and Jaya Prada, reached at the Election Commission’s office and met its officials at 1630 hrs.
Their meeting with the officials lasted for 45 minutes during which they submitted a memorandum in which they staked claim for the party’s electoral symbol. However, there was no media interaction after the meeting.
The ruling Samajwadi Party had on Sunday undergone split, when Akhilesh Yadav was declared as the new national president of the party in Lucknow, replacing Mulayam Singh Yadav, while Amar Singh was sacked from the party and Shivpal Singh Yadav was removed from the state party president’s post, at a national convention called by the Akhilesh faction.
The emergency national delegate meeting of SP, called by Akhilesh Yadav and Professor Ram Gopal Yadav, has also made Mulayam Singh Yadav as the party’s patron.
The veteran SP founder-leader has, meanwhile, cancelled his January 5 national convention that had been called in the wake of the political coup staged by Akhilesh Yadav.
From the Akhilesh side, Prof Ram Gopal Yadav is expected to approach the Election Commission on Tuesday, sources said.
