A three to four years old leopardess was found dead prima facie in a territorial fight with tigress in compartment no: 16 near Garamsur village in Kondhali Forest Range on Sunday. The body was lying there for the last three days with beginning of decomposition process.
S N Kshirsagar, Assistant Conservator of Forest, informed that the body parts were intact. A shepherd noticed the body of leopardess and informed Police Patil Sitaram Masram of Murli village. He then provided information to Prashant Humane, Range Forest Officer, Kondhali, who reached the spot along with forestmen.
The leopardess tried to climb up a nearby tree at the spot up to five metres, which is evident from the scratch marks on the truck. It seems that the beast climbed the tree in an attempt to save life but fell down as it could not make up due to straight trunk of the tree.
Our Kondhali Correspondent adds: The leopardess had injuries on face and back, indicating that it died in a fight with tigress. Dr Kadu performed post-mortem at the spot. Mortail remains were consigned to flames in presence of Kshirsagar, Humane, Kundan Hate, Honorary Wildlife Warden, G B Kamle, Forest Guard, and others.
