Delhi Bureau,

NEW DELHI,

NEW Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit called on President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu in Delhi on Monday.

After taking over the Governor’s post on October 6, it was his first visit to the national capital. It was a courtesy call, official sources said. Purohit will attend three-day Governor’s conference called by the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 11, 12 and 13.

Purohit also met Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu at his Maulana Azad Road official residence. The Governor is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh during his stay in the national capital.

Purohit’s appointment as a full time Governor comes amid the ongoing political crisis in Tamil Nadu. The State has not had a full time Governor since the retirement of K Rosaiah in August 2016.

Purohit has his task cut out as the Opposition parties, including the DMK are demanding that the K Palaniswami Government should be directed to prove its majority in the Assembly. They have been contending that the Government was in a minority in the 234-member Assembly since 19 AIADMK MLAs loyal to sidelined party leader TTV Dhinakaran expressed lack of confidence in the Chief Minister on August 22.
