Gang of burglars busted; stolen booty worth over Rs 5.37 lakh recovered

A CAP of a juvenile delinquent found at a crime spot helped Sakkardara Police crack 12 theft cases and recover stolen gold and silver ornaments collectively worth over Rs 5.37 lakh from a six-member gang of burglars.

Cops arrested Shaikh Mamin Ali Shaikh Noor Ali (38), a resident of Shanti Nagar, Chinmay Vilas Dongre (19), a resident of Plot No 17/A, Bapu Nagar, Praveen Marotrao Dongre (32), a resident of 536, Chitnis Nagar, Ramna Maroti and three juvenile delinquents.

A resident of Plot No 42, Tajbagh locality, Tausif Ahmad Qureshi (28) and his family had gone to attend the wedding reception of his brother at Hotel Gomti on Bhandara Road on September 17. His house was locked. The five-member gang sneaked into Qureshi’s house after breaking the door lock and burgled cash, gold ornaments and other valuables collectively worth Rs 5.87 lakh from an almirah. A case of house-breaking theft was registered at Sakkardara Police Station.

During investigation, cops had recovered a boy’s cap from the spot. On the basis of the cap, police started searching for the accused. One of their informers in the locality told police that he had seen a 17-year-old boy sporting the same cap a few days before the incident. Soon cops took the boy into custody. During questioning, he spilled the beans and named the other accused involved in the crime. Besides taking the three 17-year-old boys into custody, cops arrested Shaikh Mamin, Chinmaya Dongre and Praveen Dongre. The accused told the investigators that they committed as many as 12 theft cases. Subsequently, a police team recovered the stolen valuables worth Rs 5.37 lakh from their possession.

The arrests were made by Senior PI Sandipan Pawar, PI M G Orke, HC Sanjay Sonwane, NPC Sudhakar Sonkusre, PCs Rahul Warkhade, Ashish, and Nitin Bawne under the supervision of senior police officials.
