Shopkeepers fined for using plastic bags

THE Health Department of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Wednesday continued the drive against shopkeepers and vendors who use plastic carry bags and not keep dustbins at shops. The Health Department officials seized banned plastic carry bags, prepared challans and also realised spot fine from erring shopkeepers.


A team comprising officials of health department conducted drive at market places in Shivnagar, Deendayal Chowk, Civic Centre, Anjuman Market, Traffic Police Square, Chhoti Line crossing, Rampur, Badshah Halwai temple and Gwarighat. During the drive they seized nearly 30 kgs of plastic carry bags and also realised spot fine worth Rs 31,000 from shopkeepers. Health officials informed that they conducted inspection at shops in aforementioned areas and prepared challan of nearly 75 erring shopkeepers, vendors for using plastic carry bags.

The officials also seized 30 kilogrammes plastic bags and realised spot fine. Similarly, the officials also penalized shopkeepers for not keeping dustbins at the shops. Senior officials informed that the JMC has banned manufacturing, sale, transportation and use of plastic carry bags within municipal limits. Despite prohibition, shopkeepers are selling and using plastic carry bags. They said the health department has constantly been conducting drives and requesting shopkeepers to shun sale and storage of plastic carry bags. But, vendors and small shopkeepers are giving no heed to the appeal. Hence, taking strict action against the illegal act the JMC is conducting extensive drive in the city and seizing plastic bags and also realizing fine form erring shopkeepers.


It may be noted that the State Government has banned use of plastic bags in entire Madhya Pradesh and directed civic bodies to act tough against people, businessmen who manufacture, store, sale or use sub standard plastic carry bags. Following the instructions, the health department is conducting drive and taking strict action against vendors and small shopkeepers who use plastic carry bags. It is also taking action against vendors who are not maintaining cleanliness at their shops and also not keeping dustbins.
