WHILE the nation was celebrating Diwali with the near and dear ones, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi chose to be with the jawans guarding the border, far away from their homes. It was a nice gesture on the part of Mr. Modi has been celebrating Diwali with soldiers deployed along the border ever since he took over as the Prime Minister. This year, he visited picturesque Gurez Valley in Kashmir, which is a stone’s throw away from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir and a hotspot of infiltration by militants. Mr. Modi mingled with the jawans, offered sweets to them and interacted with them, boosting their morale.

The people usually remember the soldiers only in times of war or other crises facing the nation like a natural calamities or communal riots. During peace time, hardly anyone remembers them. In fact, the peace prevails in the country only because soldiers keep a constant vigil along the borders, thwarting enemies of the nation from indulging in any misadventure. We tend to forget that the soldiers are also human beings like us. They also have families like us. They also love to be with their near and dear ones during the festivals. But the call of duty and service to the motherland comes first before everything else for them. They are ready to make a supreme sacrifice for the nation without batting and eyelid. It is, therefore, the duty of every individual to remain indebted to the soldiers and help them in whatever way possible.

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi must be lauded for making it a point to be with the soldiers on Diwali day. Through his fine gesture, Mr. Modi has inspired many of the countrymen to contribute more for the nation and hail the soldiers. It has also sent a positive message that the Government really cares for the soldiers.  Taking a cue from the Prime Minister, Defence Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman also celebrated Diwali with the jawans at the strategically important place at the other end of the country, the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The gestures of Mr. Modi and Mrs. Sitharaman will go a long way in infusing patriotism among the young generation.
