CRICKET icon and Rajya Sabha member Mr. Sachin Tendulkar has won the hearts of the people by sanctioning Rs. 2 crore from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for revamping rail foot overbridges in Mumbai. The Elphinstone Road station stampede, in which 23 people were killed, could have been avoided, had the authorities taken steps to revamp the bridge, as demanded by the local leaders. However, the work was not undertaken due to ‘lack of funds’, leading to the tragedy. With Mr. Tendulkar sanctioning funds, there should be no excuse for the authorities now. Mr. Tendulkar, who had earlier transformed a village in Andhra Pradesh by adopting it and carrying out developmental works, has set an example before other MPs. He has now adopted a village in Osmanabad district in Maharashtra under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, where he is building a school, roads, water supply scheme etc. If all the MPs utilise their fund properly, then they can easily transform the entire country.

TIME-TESTED!

THE comments made by the Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force Air Marshal S. B. Deo that Russia offers defence technology to India without any strings attached are possibly aimed at defence giants in the US and Europe, who are offering their fighter jets to India. Russia is a time-tested friend of India. When India was badly in need in of tanks, submarines and fighter jets during its three wars with Pakistan, Russia offered everything off the shelf, without any condition. It has also shared technology for building Arjun tanks, MiGs, and Sukhois, besides leasing out a nuclear submarine, INS Chakra to the Indian Navy. Russia is the biggest supplier of arms and other equipment, though India, of late, has started approaching other nations for acquiring modern weapons. Of course, there were some hiccups in the smooth supply of spares from Russia due to its internal problems. But they have been taken care of. Russia has also made it clear that it has no objection if India sources weapons from other nations. Such kind of openness in friendship is always welcome!
