TRUE to its tradition, the Indian Air Force (IAF), on Tuesday performed breathtaking touch-and-go landings and take-offs on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway and showcased its top class flying skills. Taking the changing security environment in the country’s neighbourhood, the IAF is gearing itself up for all eventualities in case of emergency and enhance its capabilities even in adverse conditions. The smooth landing and take-off from a highway is first of its kind in the country, which passed off smoothly to the astonishment of the onlookers. The Indian Air Force men’s capabilities were never in doubt as they have many feats to their credit in daredevilry and this one was just a part of their top class training and skill development exercise. To a common man this may be a surprising exercise to be carried out in a civilian area. But the exercise takes into war time possibility of regular airbases going out of bounds due to bombing or missile strikes. In such a scenario highways provide alternate pathway for flying aircraft. This success of the IAF is indeed reassuring.

THE anguish expressed by the judges of the Bombay High Court over lack of enthusiasm shown by the Mumbai Police in tracing missing children is justified. In fact, slackness by police in tracing missing children is experienced by the people all over the country. There are organised gangs of criminals operating in cities and towns, which kidnap toddlers and sell them, or, push them into illegal activities at a very tender age. The hapless parents of missing children have no one to turn to but the police, who unfortunately shy away from their responsibilities. The magnitude of the problem can be gauged from the fact that in two years 70,000 children were restored to their parents under the ‘Operation Smile’, launched by the Union Home Ministry. There are thousands of other children who are not so lucky and are forced to live a miserable life. Since the parents of missing children and the child are constantly under a psychological trauma, the cops need to be very sensitive. They should leave no stone unturned in restoring the children to their parents.
