IT IS HEARTENING that the Government of India is seized of the matter concerning consumers’ rights and Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s assurance that consumer protection will receive top priority, assumes significance. Speaking at a function in Delhi on Thursday, the Prime Minister has said that the Government is in the process of setting up a special central authority to expedite matters concerning consumer complaints and their quick disposal. He also assured to look into complaints of misleading advertisements by companies. This is one of those areas which is at heart of consumer concerns as companies use false images and iconic celebrities to advertise their goods without vouchsafing for the authenticity of their claims on quality of goods they manufacture or sell. Some time past there was a thinking at top Government levels to make celebrities answerable for the authenticity of claims they advertise. This thought needs to be pursued vigorously. Quick disposal of consumer complaints is another area that needs to be expedited fast.

AN attack on Swiss tourist couple by a group of youths in Fatehpur Sikri is highly condemnable. The five accused, who have been arrested, should be punished severely for their utterly reprehensible act. Equally reprehensible is the act of the persons present there, who started taking videos of the assault, instead of coming to the rescue of the couple. It is unfortunate that while campaigns like Incredible India and Paryatan Parv have been launched by the Government with a view to attract foreign tourists to the country, attacks on foreigners are also on the rise, sullying the image of the country abroad. Despite having world-famous tourist spots, the flow of foreign tourists to India has not been encouraging. This is because of lack of infrastructure as well as rowdy behaviour of the people towards them. Foreign tourists do not feel safe to roam around freely after the dusk. And, the latest attack took place in broad daylight! Police must ensure that foreign tourists are not harassed. Attacks on foreign tourists is a blot on the country and the guilty must be punished.
