Staff Reporter,

Central Jails to join CCTNS project, says ADG Dr Bhushankumar Upadhyay

With an aim to get real-time intelligence inputs from the crowd of jail inmates, Prison Department is gearing up to form a new Intelligence Unit. The unit is, however, meant for Central Prisons only. Now, two sepoys have been allotted to each Central Prison and they would gather information and report to senior officials. A separate unit would be set up in the Prison Department once the State Government sanctions the proposal,” said Additional Director General (ADG), Prison, Dr Bhushankumar Upadhyay on Monday.

Intelligence Unit personnel would directly share inputs on illegal activities and suspicious actions inside the prison. The ADG Prison would also conduct tri-monthly meeting to review functioning of the Unit and to monitor the progress.

When asked about crime reported in prisons in recent times, Dr Upadhyay said, prison cannot be a pleasant place for criminals who are put behind bars to curb their illegal activities. Staff crunch and lack of proper training are the hurdles affecting supervision. But the system is now changing as in last two years, the Prison department got more staff of 400 and this would help it improve surveillance in jails.

“Most notorious inmates are lodged in the Arthur Road jail where fights between the gangsters are routine affair and hence we replaced steel and German utensils with fibre to prevent usage of metal utensils as a weapon against each other. But a doctor has warned the jail administration that prolonged use of fibre utensil could cause cancer and now we are thinkingon withdrawing fibre utensils,” informed ADG Upadhyay.

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) would also be set up in the prisons and CID is working on it, he added. DIG Prison Yogesh Desai and Jail Superintendent Ranitai Bhosale were present at the press meet.
