Staff Reporter,

leaders and members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who were staging protest for conducting direct elections of students’ union, faced police lathicharge near Indira Market on Friday. Blaming the State Government of constantly betraying students, a large number of ABVP members assembled at Indira Market and staged chakkajam . Police tried to convince them to roll back their chakkajam, when they refused to co-operate, police started lathicharge to disperse them.

Sudden act of lathicharge by police created chaos among ABVP leaders and students who including State Organising Secretary Vijay Athwal were injured. On the other hand, a group of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad supported students were trying to stage chakkajam in front of Government Mohanlal Hargovind Das Home Science and Science College for Women (Autonomous). According to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad office-bearers, ABVP always works for students’ welfare.

For students’ welfare, they staged massive dharna on September 21, 2016, and submitted a memorandum with demands to end semester system to conduct direct elections of students’ union, safety of girl students and scholarship. As a result, Higher Education Minister Pavaiya declared to end semester system and to organise students’ election.

Once again the State Government allegedly betrayed students and even after one year of minister’s announcement no steps have been taken to start direct elections. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Thursday declared not to tolerate betrayal of the State Government and to stage state-wide protest and stage chakkajam in front of every leading college on Friday.

According to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad office-bearers, chakkajam was successfully staged in front of every leading college run in 21 districts of Mahakoshal region. Protest was successful with support of 400 students in Jabalpur division, 340 students in Sagar division, 250 in Rewa division and 260 in Shahdol division, respectively.
