26th National Conference of State Election Commissioners begins

The 26th National Conference of State Election Commissioners began at Hanuvantia in Khandwa district on Thursday. Election commissioners of different states presented innovations carried out for free and fair elections in the conference. Nineteen state election commissioners participated in the conference. Last conference was held in Kutch, Gujarat. Discussion was also held in the conference at Hanuvantia regarding the execution of decisions taken in Kutch conference.


Election Commissioner of Maharashtra J S Saharia said that Income-Tax officers were also deputed to monitor expenditure of candidates in civic elections. B Nagi Reddy of Telangana informed that expenditure limit was fixed for candidates of panch and sarpanch posts. The expenditure limit is Rs 10,000 for candidate of panch post. A K Singh of West Bengal said that election dates are decided by the state government in West Bengal, unlike other states. S K Shrivastav of Delhi and Chandigarh said that EVMs can be shared by forming zone of neighboring states in order to reduce its expenditure.
