India’s Wonder Woman MC Mary Kom has proved her mettle once again winning her fifth Asian Boxing Championship gold medal. The star boxer dominated the fight from the word go, giving her opponent, Korea’s Hyang Mi Kim, no chance to come back into the contest. Magnificent Mary has yet again proved her supremacy over the sport. Juggling multiple roles as a Rajya Sabha MP, Government observer for the sport, her own international career and most importantly, as a hands-on mother to three young sons, Mary Kom has herself admitted to have struggled for every medal. For an Olympic medallist and recognised ‘legend’ of the sport to make this admission is truly a sad reflection of the sporting culture, or rather lack of it, in our country. True, every sportsperson who aims for the summit has to fight a battle of grit and sweat, but Mary Kom’s fight has not just been for her growth in a male-dominated sport, but also with the system. And yet she has refused to give up, rising from the ashes again and again like a phoenix, proving to be a true hero, invincible and indomitable.

FOR India cooperation from its neighbours assumes great importance in curbing the activities of terror groups belonging to various states. In this regard Bangladesh has been proving a very useful partner in dismantling terror networks operating from its soil. In the last few years Bangladesh has handed over several top notch separatist militants spearheading secessionist activities in various North-Eastern states of the country. Recently Bangladesh police handed over five terrorists to Assam police after they had completed their jail terms in that country. If similar cooperation is available from other neighbours India would be in a position to cripple the activities of various terror groups. But countries like China and Pakistan not only provide safe havens to terror groups but also use them to destabilise India. It is because of this hostile attitude of these neighbours that India is engaged in a prolonged battle against terrorists, putting heavy strain on the country’s security. However, neighbours like Bangladesh offer a ray of hope in this fight.
