Lackadaisical working of Water Resources Department is vulnerable to the security of canals. Senior officers are overlooking their responsibility of taking prompt action on complaints pertaining to damage of canals to develop threat amongst persons involved in breaking canals. The situation is projected to become worst in coming months following the depleting-level of water bodies.

Taking a serious concern on scanty rainfall the district administration has already declared alert for safety of canals and other water bodies and imposed Section 144 of the IPC near Left and Right Bank Canals of Rani Awanti Bai Lodhi Sagar Pariyojana, Bargi Dam. Alert was declared pointing out the probability of water scarcity in rural areas which is vulnerable to damage of canals and water bodies by anti-social and influential persons for fulfilling water requirement in their respective areas. The seriousness of senior officers in water resource department has been exposed in a recent instance in which a minor canal covering 5 to 6 kilometres area from Majhgavan to Matamar in Panagar assembly constituency and fulfilling requirement of water at around three Gram Panchayats was damaged and crops of adjoining farms were spoiled after being submerged into the water in village Bandhi.

Instead of taking prompt action or initiate inquiry to ascertain the reason behind damaging of canal, officers of water resource department are failed in lodging a police complaint. Water Resource Department, Sub Engineer, A B Sharma, while taking to ‘The Hitavada’, termed the breaking of canal as a routine practice as there was not major damage reported in the incident. He expressed his helplessness in giving any information about inquiry into the matter and lodging police complaint. He mentioned the farmers responsible for damaging canal but tight-lipped in naming anyone.

It ma be noted that District Magistrate and Collector Mahesh Chandra Choudhary has imposed section 144 near main canals of Bargi Dam and instructed the officers and concerned departments to pay special attention on protection of canals. Officers have been directed to take prompt action against person involve in damaging canals. He also ordered the competent departments to start preparations for arrangement of fodder and water to ensure its availability in summer season.
