Principal Correspondent,

This will help working police personnel to pursue higher education through YCMOU

The then Vice-Chancellor of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) Dr R Krishnakumar in 2010 had initiated special courses as per the needs of various categories. It was he, who had planned the course for police to get them well-acquainted with their own administration. The course, Master of Business Administration (Public Police Management), started then but discontinued in 2015 as the term of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between cops and the university ended. The present Vice-Chancellor, Dr E Vayunandan has taken the baton ahead by reviving the MoU which was signed again.

Prof E Vayunandan has started reviving the courses that were stopped without any reason. Dr Dinesh Bhonde, Registrar of the university who had earlier worked with the University in capacity of Controller of Examinations (CoE), so he is well aware of certain courses that began in the past. He is assisting Dr Vayunandan in making YCMOU again public-oriented. As a part of that revival process, YCMOU has signed a fresh MoU with Maharashtra Police Department. Joint Director of Police Dr Jalinder Supekar signed the MoU along with Dr Dinesh Bhonde, Registrar of YCMOU.

V-C Dr E Vayunandan; Deputy Director of Police Nandkumar Thakur and Tirupati Kakde were present. Director General of Police Satish Mathur, Additional Director General of Police Dr Jagannathan encouraged the team to sign the MoU.
As part of the MoU, the working personnel of Police Department will be allowed to access various distant learning courses of the Open University. Police officers and staff will get an opportunity to pursue higher education through YCMOU from the present academic session 2017-18 only.

As part of the MoU, the Police Commissioner offices, police training centres, State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) centres, and Wireless Training Centres across the state will work as study centers of the YCMOU. Humanities and Social Sciences Department of the open university has already designed a special course MBA (Police Administration) that will be available for police personnel from this academic session.

Police personnel will also get an opportunity to apply for MBA and other professional courses. The university is in process of designing special professional courses for the family-members and widows of the policemen.

“This MoU is a major development for police personnel in Maharashtra, especially for Sub-inspectors and Sepoy level personnel who get selected into the police force early and could not continue their education due to the hectic job schedule,” pointed out Prof E Vayunandan.

Dr Dinesh Bhonde said, “It is a good step. The course will be useful for police. After joining police force, many time people fail to continue the education. This course will enable them to learn certain things which are related to their profession. This course will be run under Department of Humanities and Social Science.”

The course is the inclusion of human values, social change and movement, human rights and basic concept, consumer protection, Indian society and Public Administration.
The Director of Computer Science faculty of YCMOU Prof Madhav Palshikar has played an important role in starting this course. Director of Humanities and Social Science Dr Umesh Rajderkar compered the programme.
