Diamonds worth 4 lakh seized from smuggler

Reportedly, Panna district has earned a name for good quality diamonds and as a result, theft and of sale of diamonds happens to be common feature in the diamond producing region. In view of complaints pertaining to theft and illegal sale, SP Panna Riyaz Iqbal instructed officials to take stringent action against diamond smugglers. The directives issued yielded results and a smuggler was apprehended by the police team and some 87 pieces of diamond worth around Rs 4 lakh were seized from him.


In tune with the directive issued by SP Panna, cops from Devendanagar police station deployed informers and came to learn about a smuggler who had boarded a bus from Devendranagar to get down at Satna. Acting on the information, SHO Jaswant Singh Rajput apprised senior officers.


SP Panna, taking serious note of the information, constituted two separate teams headed by ASP R D Prajapati and SDOP Panna Parmal SIngh. The team moved ahead to intercept the bus bound for Satna. Both teams arrived at Badagaon curve and stopped the bus. Soon after the bus was stopped at the curve, a passenger got down from the bus and attempted to run away.


Cops detected the movement of the accused and managed to get hold of the man who revealed his identity as Salim Mustafa Khan (40), resident of Hinauta NMDC Majhgawa under Mandla police station. In course of search, cops recovered four plastic bags kept in the pockets. Cops opened the packets and found shining diamonds of 24 carat. Brought to police station, the accused was subjected to interrogation to reveal the source of the precious diamonds. Besides the touchstone to measure the carat value of the diamonds and weighing machine was also recovered from the smuggler.


The accused told the cops that he had purchased the diamonds from people residing around NMDC Majhgawa and accepted that he was taking the diamonds to sell at Satna.
Cops seized some 87 pieces of diamonds of 24 carat worth around Rs 4 lakh. As the accused failed to give convincing reply on the source of procurement, he was booked under relevant section of IPC and put behind bars. The accused would be produced before court on Friday.


The police team that nabbed the accused comprised of CSP Kotwali Arvind SIngh Dangi, SHO Devendra Nagar Jaswant SIngh Rajput, ASI Man SIngh Bisen, Vikram SIngh, Aditya Kushwaha, Aiymat Sen, Vrashketu Rawat, Rahul Singh Bhaghel and Neeraj Raikwar. SP Panna has announced prize for the team having arrested one diamond smuggler.
