Killers still at large

Eight police teams tracing the culprits

Cops detain prime suspect Pankaj Harode’s driver for questioning

Autopsy report reveals that Rahul Agrekar was burnt alive in unconscious state

FAMILY members of lottery trader’s son Rahul Agrekar (31), who was abducted from Lakadganj area for ransom and later found murdered in Butibori, accepted his body even before results of the DNA test, and performed the last rites at Gangabai ghat on Thursday.

Several police teams, including 10 from Crime Branch and three from Zone III, have already been fanned out to trace the killers. Some teams left for places in adjoining Madhya Pradesh (MP) but yet to make any headway in the case.

Cops are yet to get the exact location of the two prime suspects -- Durgesh Bokde (32), a resident of Durgawati Square; and Pankaj Harode (36), a resident of Itwari -- as their cellphones are switched off. Their last location traced by the investigators was at Narsingpur railway station in MP.

After committing the heinous crime at Petichuha jungle, village Bothli, about 10 kilometre from Butibori, the killers left towards Chhindwara in Harode’s Mahindra Bolero car (MH-49/B-7744) the same night. They went to the house of Harode’s relative in village Pohama in Chhindwara district (MP) and stayed there till 5 am on Wednesday.

Harode changed the sim card and handset and called his driver on Chhindwara Road. After the driver reached there, they asked him to drop them at Narsingpur station and take the vehicle back to Nagpur.

Cops intercepted the vehicle on Kamptee Road after going through the footage of CCTV cameras installed at different toll booths and detained its driver Jackie for questioning.
A senior officer told ‘The Hitavada’ that the police are investigating the case from all possible angles. On the basis of the belongings of Rahul recovered from the spot, the family members of the deceased accepted the charged body and performed the last rites, he added.

He informed that the DNA samples of Rahul’s family members have already been sent to laboratory for testing. Initial autopsy report revealed that Rahul was burnt alive by the abductors, the officer added.
The officer said that Harode owns brick kilns in Narsingpur and most of the workers there are from Jharkhand. Police feel that the suspects might be hiding somewhere in MP or Jharkhand.

“We also conducted inquiries with the uncle of Harode to whose house they visited in the early hours on Wednesday before fleeing to Narsingpur. Harode’s uncle told police that his nephew was looking scared and did not talk much,” he added.

Son of Suresh Agrekar, a leading lottery trader, Rahul, was picked up from near his home at Darodkar Square on Tuesday morning. In the afternoon, Rahul’s elder brother Jayesh received a call from a person claiming to have abducted Rahul and held him captive. The abductors had made three calls to Jayesh demanding Rs one crore for Rahul’s release.

They asked Jayesh to bring the cash at Jagdamba Temple in Koradi at 11 pm the same day. But, the abductors had already killed Rahul after making the second call.
Later, Rahul’s charred body was found in Butibori.

Prime suspect Bokde used to work at Agrekar’s shop earlier. He later started his own business. Bokde had borrowed Rs one lakh from Rahul but was refusing to return the amount.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that Bokde had contacted Jayesh and called him at Shahid Chowk a fortnight ago. Jayesh and one of his servants visited Shahid Chowk but Bokde had already left. Besides Bokde and Harode, possibility of involvement of some more persons and an insider in the crime cannot be ruled out.
