Gas survivors staged demonstration at Yadgar-e-Shahjehani Park. The five urgent issues that require attention are proper medical care, rehabilitation, justice, adequate compensation

On Thursday, gas survivors staged demonstration at Yadgar-e-Shahjehani Park demanding medical rehabilitation. The five most urgent issues that require attention are proper medical care, rehabilitation, justice, adequate compensation.

The Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh alleged that the government has not moved a single petition for urgent hearing on additional compensation. Meanwhile, victims of the disaster continue to die battling economic hardship caused due to exposure related ill health and paltry compensation. Besides, the government's neglect towards the legal rights of the Bhopal victims to adequate compensation is evident in its carelessness regarding figures of injury and death. The figures of injury and death in the curative petition remain downplayed to a fraction of the actual damage. Besides pension to the widows of gas survivors has not been resumed which is affecting their daily routine activities.

Last year, Madhya Pradesh Government announced to build a memorial of one of the world’s worst industrial disaster. The premises of the defunct Union Carbide factory from where toxic gas spewed out on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, wreaking havoc has been selected as site. Gas survivors requested to strongly pursue the curative petition filed in the Supreme Court seeking compensation and medical facilities for the tragedy survivors.

Meanwhile inadequate facilities continue to hound the hospitals meant for treatment of Bhopal gas tragedy survivors and their family members. Shortage of staff, poor sanitary conditions, delayed reporting by medical staff, drugs of questionable quality and improper arrangements for swine flu treatment, smart card to patients, digitalized history of gas survivors family to facilitate treatment etc are major issues which are yet to cater attention from authorities.
