National Drought Assessment Team get details on drought-hit areas in State

Chief Secretary Vivek Dhand on Thursday briefed the National Drought Assessment Team about the actuality of drought-affected areas in the State.
It is worth mentioning here that Chhattisgarh Government had declared 96 tehsils in 21 districts as drought-hit and urged the central government for a special relief package. In this direction, the National Drought Assessment Team is touring Chhattisgarh to assess the ground situations here since November 21.


The ten-member National Drought Assessment Team which is led by Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Joint Secretary K S Sriniwasan during these three days visited various parts severely drought affected districts including Dhamtari, Bemetara, Balodabazar, Mahasamund, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Raipur.


On Thursday, the team held meeting with Chief Secretary and other senior officials of the State, where they were informed about the actual drought conditions. During the meetingm, Joint Secretary K S Sriniwasan informed that his team members had visited various parts of the State and during their visits had held interaction with farmers, villagers and public representatives on drought conditions.
They have also gathered information on implementation of Prime Minister‘s Crop Insurance Scheme, MNREGS, distribution of ration under PDS, paddy procurement and about availability of potable water for drinking and daily utility purpose.


During the meeting, Chief Secretary Vivek Dhand informed that the team that of the 150 tehsils in 27 districts, 96 tehsils in 21 districts have been declared as drought affected.


Due to deficient and erratic rainfall coupled with untimely rainfall, the farmers couldn’t carry out proper paddy cultivation resulting into lack of proper crop growth whichfurther affected the paddy production.


The National Drought Assessment Team were also appraised that paddy production have severely hampered in the districts and tehsils where they had visited.
Among those present during the meeting were Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Singh, ACS (Panchayat) M K Raut, Principal Secretary (Food) Richa Sharma, Secretary (Revenue) N K Khakha, Secretary (WRD) Sonmoni Borah, Secretary (PHE) Shahla Nigar, Special Secretary (Energy) Siddharth Komal Singh Pardeshi and large number of senior administrative officials.
