Gavaskar to be honoured with ‘Jeevan Gaurav’ award today

BATTING legend and the original Little Master of Indian cricket, Sunil Manohar Gavaskar, will be conferred the prestigious ‘Jeevan Gaurav’ award on Saturday evening by Padmagandha Pratishthan, a leading literary organisation of Vidarbha. The former Indian captain will be honoured in a function scheduled at 6.30 pm at Kalidas Sabhagriha of Persistent Systems, IT Park, Subhash Nagar. Gavaskar has already arrived in the city for commentary during the India vs Sri Lanka Test that got under way on Friday at VCA stadium, Jamtha.

Padmagandha Pratishthan bestows the ‘Jeevan Gaurav’ award every year to eminent personalities in various fields. For the 19th edition, it has chosen Gavaskar, the first Indian to breach the 10,000 runs club in Test cricket. Gavaskar will be felicitated at the hands of Dr Pankaj Chande, former vice-chancellor of Kalidas Sanskrit Vidyapeeth; Prashant Vaidya, former India player; Sameer Bendre, Global Head (HR) Persistent; Nanda Jichkar, Mayor; and Vikas Sirpurkar, former Supreme Court judge.

The earlier awardees by the Pratishthan include stalwarts like Padma Vibhushan Dr Jayant Naralikar, Padma Vibhushan Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, Lt Gen Dr Shekatkar, Padma Shri Adv Ujwal Nikam, Padma Vibhushan Dr Vijay Bhatkar, Magsaysay award winner Baba Amte, litteratuer Dr Ram Shewalkar, director Rajdutt, Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare to name a few.
