NARAYAN Rane is firm on contesting Council by-poll even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has hinted at fielding another candidate. The Shiv Sena is also preparing to field a candidate against Rane if he enters the fray. Rane, who has made all efforts to garner votes required for the win, will meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday over the issue. Rane is peeved as he was not included in the Cabinet and now he is required to fight for getting a candidature for Council by-poll.

The election, necessitated by his own resignation, will be held on December 7.The BJP has been pushed to corner as the Shiv Sena has threatened to field candidate against Rane with the support of the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party. Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil on Thursday met Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. However, since Sena is firm on its decision, Rane was given an indication to wait. The BJP leaders, who held a core committee meeting on Thursday, did not want to offend Sena on the eve of Gujarat Assembly elections. It was opined that Rane should be told to contest elections in July. The meeting gave all rights to Fadnavis to decide on the issue.

Though BJP wants Rane to go slow, he is bent on contesting the by-poll as if he fails to contest, then his entry into the Cabinet will be delayed. To win the poll, 145 votes would be required while BJP has 122 votes. Rane, however, has claimed that he would garner rest of the votes. He also claimed that some Sena members would vote for him. The air would be cleared after Rane meets Fadnavis.
