8 killed, over 30 injured as bus falls into gorge

In a ghastly road accident, 8 people were killed and more than 30 injured when a Prayag Service bus travelling from Allahabad to Bilaspur fell in a gorge of Banjari Ghat near Pendra in Bilaspur district on November 26. 90 passengers were travelling in the bus at the time of the accident. The injured have been admitted in primary health centers from where they were referred to Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Science (CIMS) Hospital Bilaspur. Passengers of the bus say that bus driver was drunk. The Amarkantak Road was blocked for about four hours due to long line of vehicles and huge number of villagers.

According to police sources, the Prayag Service bus lost control and fell in a gorge of Bajari Ghat. Eight people were killed on the spot and more than thirty were seriously injured. The injured were taken to health centers of Ratanpur, Pendra, Gaurella from where the very seriously injured were referred to CIMS Bilaspur.

Vishva Deepak Tripathi, Sub Divisional Officer Police (SDOP) said that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the driver. In this accident, six injured were admitted in Pendra health center. The persons admitted are Sadhram Binjhwar, Ram Chandra Bariha, Sadhmati Bariha and Madan Lal Bariha. The three were returning from performing the last rights. Tripathi further said that ten people have been admitted in Gaurella health center.

A woman resident of Bhubaneswar succumbed to her injury while undergoing treatment in Gaurella health center. Persons undergoing treatment are Mushkan Sahu, Tikaram Sarthi, Virendra Kumar, Sultan Singh Sarthi, Aniruddha Sahu, Anita Sahu, Chaitram Sahu, Ramwati Sahu and Urmila Sahu. KPS Paikra, Ratanpur Police Station Incharge said that 26 people have been admitted in Ratanpur health center. Condition of some are critical. Seventeen seriously injured have been referred to CIMS Bilaspur. A team of Doctors from Bilaspur and nearby blocks rushed to the accident site. According to the eyewitnesses, the bus lost control and fell into the gorge.

The doors and windows of the bus were gas cut to take out the dead bodies and other passengers. Bilaspur MLA and Minister Amar Agrawal expressing is deep condolence to the families of the deceased and wished speedy recovery of the injured. The Minister has instructed the district administration to extend all possible help to the injured persons.
