Robbers strike at SBI’s Mandhar branch

Evidently outsmarting Raipur Police and deepening the sense of insecurity among common people, unidentified thieves equipped with gas cutters managed to enter one of the most trusted Public Sector Banking institutions, State Bank of India’s Mandhar branch, and the outlaws broke open lockers and chests to decamp with cash and gold, as if enjoyed their week-end in their own style from last Friday night till Monday morning when police finally woke up only to register a case of trespassing and theft.

SBI’s Mandhar branch, located in the limits of Vidhan Sabha police station, was targeted by the burglars and the incident has left the impression as if the time chosen by the outlaws for exercising their modus operandi was between last Friday night and Monday morning, a sheer calculated work to take advantage of successive holidays due to closure of the institution.

As many as 13 lockers and also two chests were broke open by the outlaws. It may be mentioned that Principal Secretary, Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, Devendra Verma is one among the distinguished customers of this bank who were allotted lockers in this branch.

The branch manager PA Krishna lodged a compliant with the police wherein it was maintained that Rs 1.97 lakh cash 99.3 tolas of gold were stolen, Vidhan Sabha police informed, adding case was registered under Sections 457, 380 of the Indian Penal Code, which read lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment and theft in dwelling house, etc. According to City Superintendent of Police, Mana, Mukesh Khare, exact amount of theft could not be known because it is only the people who were allotted lockers can tell what has been stolen from their respective lockers. Vidhan Sabha police informed that investigations were on in this regard.

The said branch of SBI fell in the outer area and the bank management was asked to employ security guards for adequate safety, but investigations after the incident revealed that no security guard was employed, the police informed. Sources told that the branch earlier was located in the vicinity of the State Legislative Assembly building and then it was safe. Later, it was shifted to the area where it is presently located. The strange thing noticed as this newspaper contacted some of local people living in vicinity of the present branch was that even low profile persons like kiosk operators, little grocery and tea stall owners and like people were all knowing that lockers were there in this branch.

The thieves daringly entered into the bank premises and after breaking around lockers with gas-cutter they took away cash and ornaments. Before attempting the burglary, the outlaws had cleverly snapped the connection of CCTV in the bank so that they do not get identified. The police informed that looking into the modus operandi of the burglary it appears that they had made an elaborate reeke of the bank premises and its working before executing the act. It may be mentioned that Raipur Police has been doing one or the other exercise like checking the houses in outskirts, verifying people with regard to their identities and so on.

During the night, police has been maintaining vigil and sounding hooters in colonies and residential localities. After being informed about the robbery, police team along with crime branch personnel, forensic experts and dog squad rushed to the spot to undertake investigation at the crime scene, said police, elaborating that investigators have collected finger-prints and other evidences from the crime scene. The police said that they are also trying to get camera visuals from the nearby spots to trace the culprits. The theft came to light on Monday morning when the branch was opened, explained police.
