Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board (CSCB) has banned bursting of crackers in six major cities, including capital Raipur, of State during winter as part of State Government’s initiative to control air pollution. Other cities include Bilaspur, Bhilai, Durg, Raigarh and Korba.

According to CSCB, bursting of crackers will be banned for a period of two months from December 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018. CSCB Chairman and Housing and Environment Principal Secretary Aman Kumar Singh issued this order under Section 19(5) of Air (Pollution Prevention and Control) Act 1981 on Tuesday. It is to be mentioned, entire state has been declared as Air Pollution Control Area under the Act.

Keeping in mind air is more polluted during winter, the CSCB Chairman issued the abovementioned directives to control air pollution which, according to him, will definitely be a challenge.

Recently, the Principal Secretary, Housing and Environment, addressed District Collectors and Superintendents of Police (SPs) of these six districts, through a video conferencing, state government’s policy of zero tolerance towards pollution and asked them to initiate measures for curbing air pollution in their respective districts. The fresh order of CSCB is being seen as one of the measures towards pollution control, suggested during the video conferencing.
