Staff Reporter,

Although the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) is making efforts to ensure cleanliness in the city, but its endeavor is falling short to achieve desired results as dumps of garbage are still lying along main roads and trash bins are brimming with waste.

The sorry state of affairs is exposing the Health Department of JMC. The department seems to have turned blind eye to cleanliness arrangements. The negligence of civic body is causing great inconvenience to citizens.

The civic body spends crores of rupees over cleanliness arrangements. It has also given cleanliness contract of several wards of the city under door-to-door garbage collection arrangement.
Apart from that, the civic body is also carrying out special drive under Swachh Survekshan to ensure proper cleanliness in the city. Despite this, it has failed badly to keep the city clean.

The JMC has engaged huge manpower in sanitation work. It is also taking help of a company in collecting and transporting garbage from households. The JMC has bestowed the responsibility of ensuring cleanliness in the city to Deputy Commissioners, Health Officers, Chief Sanitary Inspectors, Inspectors, Supervisors, Assistants, sanitary workers, daily wage employees. Despite this, it has failed to ensure cleanliness as garbage dumps are lying everywhere and trash bins are brimming with garbage.

Regardless of such disarrangements, the civic body is taking no serious step to resolve the problem. It is forcing people to live in unhygienic environment. Authorities concerned are taking no pains to direct senior officials to ensure proper cleanliness. Despite giving thick salary to senior officials, it is not asking them to discharge their responsibility properly and provide clean surroundings to the citizen. It is observed that the Health Department officials often make tall claims of proper cleanliness, but ground releases negate their claims.

It is the right time when the Health Department of JMC must awake from slumber and make genuine efforts to maintain proper cleanliness in the city as the team of Quality Control of India (QCI) would soon visit the city and would inspect cleanliness arrangements under Swachh Survekshan 2018. The survey and feedback of citizens would ensure the position of the city in the Survekshan.
