Krishna Sobti to get this year’s Jnanpith award

RENOWNED Hindi writer Krishna Sobti has been chosen for this year’s Jnanpith Award. Ninety two-year-old Krishna Sobti was chosen for the prestigious award at a meeting of the selection committee held here on Friday. The meeting was chaired by renowned Hindi critic Namwar Singh. Sobti has been chosen for the 53rd Jnanpith award for her immense contribution in the field of literature.

The jury for the selection of the award comprised of Girishwar Mishra, Shamim Hanifi, Harish Trivedi, Ramakant Rath and the Director of the Bharatiya Jnanpith Leela Dhar Mandloi. Last year, the award was given to famous Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh. Born on February 18, 1925, in Gujarat, Sobti settled in Delhi after Partition and has been writing for a long time.

She received the Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘Jindaginama’ in 1980. In 1996, she was made the Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi, which is considered the highest honour of the Academy. She is also the recipient of the Vyas Samman and Shalaka Samman. Sobti came into limelight in 1966 with her book ‘Mitro Marjani.’
