President awardee State artisans enhance glory of Rajyotsav-2017

At a time when noted Bollywood playback singers Sukhwinder Singh and KK hog headlines at the 17th edition of Rajyotsav there are some unsung heroes, who have won President Awards. Honoured with National Award for Master Craft persons and Weavers by the President of India on various occasions for their skill in weaving and dying ‘kosa’ saree, these three award winning artisans – Nilambar Prasad Dewangan, Nathuram Dewangan and Devvrat Dey certainly add to the glory of Rajyotsava.

Counting his achievements and awards, Nilambar Prasad Dewangan, son of Sukhram Dewangan and resident of Chandrapur in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, said his work has been recognised thrice in 2002, 2003 and 2004 by the Government of India. ‘Bastar Kala Kosa’ and a specially designed ‘Dupatta’ have brought him national level award. “I am proud to be honoured as my work has also brought name for my state. I have learnt this art from my father President awardee Sukhram Dewangan and I want to pass this skill on to my next generation,” said the 47-year-old artisan while proudly displaying his award winning creation in one of the stalls at Shilp Gram. Nilambar’s brother Puran Kumar has also been honoured with national award in 1993.

Another award winning artisan from Raigarh is Nathuram Dewangan who had bagged the national award in 2008, said his specification is ‘Bastar Art Jala’ (Kosa Saree). “I am also carrying forward family business. I am also honoured by the Madhya Pradesh Government on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on its golden jubilee function,” said Nathuram.

Speaking about his future plan, he said innovation in his profession will be the area he will focus on. Similarly, Devvrat Dey another artisan who had put up the stall bagged the national award in 2003. “Creativity in my work has been key behind my success and it has also brought me the national level award. My wife Ruchita Dey is also a national award winning artisan and we as a couple is the first in India to attain such feat,” said Dey.
