Man held for changing IMEI numbers of mobile

A COMBINED team of Crime Branch and Ghamapur police succeeded in apprehending a man involved in changing IMEI number of mobile handsets and seized tampered mobile handsets and computer system from a mobile repairing store on Saturday evening. The accused has been identified as Rishi Chourasia (30), son of Panna Lal Chourasia, a resident of Sheetlamai area in Ghamapur.


Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Sandeep Mishra informed that they received information about a mobile mechanic who used to change IMEI number of mobile handsets.


Taking a serious note on the information, Crime Branch fielded a policeman to collect evidences against the accused.
The policeman posing as a customer reached the mobile repairing shop named Prateep Mobile Shop. The shop owner successfully changed IMEI number of the handset when a combine team of Crime Branch and police led by SHO of Ghamapur police station Anil Gupta trapped the accused and seized tampered mobile handsets and computer used to change the IMEI numbers from the spot.

Additional SP Sandeep Mishra informed that the illegal practice of changing IMEI number is vulnerable in maintaining law and order arrangements as anti-social elements may take its advantage in materialising criminal activities. SHO of Ghamapur police station Anil Gupta informed that police have registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC and relevant sections of the IT Act, while further investigations are underway.
