Estranged relations destroyed entire family

AS SURMISED by the investigators on initial clues, the murder of 61-year-old college Principal Moreshwar Mahadevrao Wankhede turned out to be a case of contract killing. Police have arrested Wankhede’s wife, daughter and four contract killers on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy, on Saturday. One of the accused is still absconding.

Estranged family relations was the reason behind the gruesome killing, cops have revealed. Wankhede was hacked to death near NEERI gate on early Friday morning while on way to the railway station on his two-wheeler.
It took just a day for the Bajaj Nagar police to crack the case. They arrested Moreshwar’s wife, daughter and four contract killers, who were promised Rs four lakh to kill the college principal.

The wife and daughter had allegedly paid Rs 20,000 in advance. They have been booked under Sections 302, 120 (b) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused will be produced in the court on Sunday.

The arrested accused Anita Moreshwar Wankhede (46) and daughter Sayali Moreshwar Wankhede (22) are residents of 48, HIG, Mhada Colony, Narendra Nagar. The other four accused include Shubham alias Bunty Mohurle, Ankit Ramlal Katewar (19), Shashikant alias Sonu Chandrakant Choudhary (19), all are residents of Nildoh, Hingna; Sagar alias Paaji Bawari (20), a resident of Hingna and Ankush Badge (20), a resident of Hingna. Shubham is still at large and cops are searching for him.

Addressing a press conference at CP Office, Additional Commissioner of Police Shamrao Dhighaonkar said that the wife and daughter decided to eliminate Moreshwar as they were fed up of repeated quarrels in the house. Moreshwar was suspecting Anita’s fidelity which often led to the frequent tiffs.

Daughter’s friend accepted ‘Supari’

Sayali married son of a businessmen when she was 19 but was staying at her father’s place for last two years. She was a student of B.Sc at a science college situated in Hingna. Co-accused Shubham Mohurle was also studying in the same college. The duo were ‘close friends’ and Shubham used to regularly visit her place. He was aware of quarrels in the family.

Police said, Sayali first asked Shubham to eliminate Moreshwar in August 2017. However, he did not take her seriously. After a month she again informed Shubham about the rowdy behaviour of her father with the family members and asked him to rescue them. This time he assured Sayali of eliminating Moreshwar. Sayali then called Shubham at her house where he had a meeting with her mother. The mother and daughter duo asked Shubham to kill Moreshwar and make it look like an accident. They offered him Rs four lakh for the job. Shubham also accepted initial payment of Rs 20,000, police said.
Shubham took his friends Ankush, Shashikant and Ankit into confidence for the murder. According to police, he had told the young boys that the contract was fixed at Rs 1.50 lakh.

Recce done for 15 days

Shubham and Sayali were in regular touch and kept studying in and out timings of Moreshwar. The accused followed Moreshwar for two weeks. They also scanned the entire area in search of locations of installed CCTV cameras. After doing recce for two weeks, the accused finalised the road stretch between NEERI gate and entrance gate of office of DIG (Prison) to commit the crime.

Police said, the killers’ first attempt failed in last week of October. They had chased Moreshwar till NEERI gate early in morning but called off the operation at the last moment. The accused panicked at the last moment, an officer said.
Later, they decided to rope in Sagar alias Paji Bawari (20) in the conspiracy. Sagar was friend of Ankush, but Ankush had not disclosed contract killing angle to Sagar. On Thursday night, Ankush and Sagar consumed alcohol till 2 am on a bridge at Nildoh. They called Shashikant and Ankit at the bridge and moved to Narendra Nagar on two motorcycles at around 3 am. After noticing Moreshwar moving towards railway station on his Dio moped at 4.15 am, they followed him and attacked with a sword on his head near NEERI gate. Moreshwar instantly fell on the road and sustained multiple injuries.

“As per the statement of the accused, they murdered Moreshwar when he was lying unconscious on the road. They slit his throat and stabbed on his face and head,” police said.

The accused fled the spot and reached the residence of Shubham at 4.30 am. As Shubham was not present they contacted him by using his brother’s mobile phone. They met Shubham at the bridge and told about the murder. Later, the five criminals went home. DCP Zone I Smartna Patil, Sr. PI, Bajaj Nagar, Dnyaneshwar Patil were present at the press conference.
