Special Correspondent,

Union Minister for Road Transport and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has stepped in and has directed Municipal Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal to protect the construction of houses in Wathoda area in East Nagpur. The said land has been reserved for regional center of Sports Authority of India (SAI), and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued eviction notices to people in 300 buildings and houses constructed in this area over a period of 20-25 years.

SAI’s regional centre is coming up on 141 acres of land in this area. Irked over the eviction notices issued by NMC to residents, political leaders are now accusing NMC of being responsible for illegal construction in Wathoda area in
East Nagpur.

The people in the area purchased plots from original land-owners and registered their documents with Stamps and Registration Office. In fact, they are paying property tax to NMC. Also, NMC has constructed roads, sewerage line, and provided other amenities in the area. Now, suddenly, the civic body is requiring this land for construction of SAI regional centre.

According to sources, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) had acquired the said land in 1962 for various purposes. Later, the land was handed over to NMC as per the directions of the State Government. Sadly, negligent NMC officers did not carry out mutation of land in NMC’s favour. As a result, till 2012, the ‘Aakhiv Patrika’ (property card) had names of original land-owners on records.

Krishna Khopde, East Nagpur MLA of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), met Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and requested him to protect the innocent buyers, who had bought the land in Wathoda area. The corporators from East Nagpur demanded safeguarding of the interest of the the people.

Khopde also met Additional Commissioner Ravindra Kumbhare in this regard. He said that NMC had begun the process of mutation after 50 years. NMC has issued eviction notices to owners of 92 houses in Wathoda, and 91 houses in Tarodi (Khurd) areas. “The civic body is on wrong foot. NMC should not remove the people and give adjacent land to SAI for its regional centre,” he demanded.

Meanwhile, Adv Yashwant Meshram told mediapersons in a press conference that the Civil Judge (Senior Division) Nagpur had given a judgment in favour of the people in 2013. The petitioner Ishwar Dhote had filed a case against Maa Subhalxmi Land Developers and others. NMC had issued notices to residents of Khasra number 178/1 in Wathoda area. The people had bought this piece of land from Maroti Shamrao Tadas as his name was in ‘Aakhiv Patrika’.

He claimed that NMC had lost the case in the court and also failed to file the appeal in 90 days. He said, NMC has no rights to remove them and that notices issued by the civic body were ‘illegal’. They also lodged a complaint in Nandanvan Police Station in this regard.
Ashish Khedkar, Raju Deshbhratar, Bandu Borkar, and Moreshwar Meshram were present in press conference.
