Staff Reporter,

‘Character-building’ is the soul of ‘Shyamchi Aai’. It is not just a book or an autobiography of Sane Guruji, but it is an authentic and sacred document to improve the entire society which has lost morality, said noted writer and dramatist Prabhakar Thengdi on Sunday.

Thengdi was delivering a lecture on ‘Shyamchi Aai: Kaalchi, Aajchi aani Udyachi’ organised by Dhadpad Manch of late Nirmala Wamanrao Joshi Memorial Public Education and Welfare Society. The guest lecture was oraganised to observe 100th death anniversary of late Yashodabai Sadashivrao Sane, mother of Sane Guruji at Vinoba Vichar Kendra, near Bole Petrol Pump.

Noted dramatist Prof Parag Ghonge presided over. Narayan Joshi, President of Dhadpad Manch also shared dais.
Shyamchi Aai could be termed as Bhagwat Geeta, Bible or Quran which teaches an individual an unconditional love of a mother for her child and vice versa. Very simply dialogues between a mother and her son presented by Sane Guruji through this book brings out the hidden talents of an individual. Present youths in India are following the foot steps of westerners and celebrating Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Friendship Day or Valentine’s Day; but ‘Shyamchi Aai’ is the only book on the earth which has taught developing human values in society, Thengdi stated.

Expressing a concern over the growing habits of smoking, drinking in women; rise in cases of female foeticide and attitude of women denying motherhood, Thengdi appealed, every woman in India must read ‘Shyamchi Aai’ to understand how a mother could develop character of her child.

Dr Parag Ghonge narrated an importance of November 5 which is celebrated as Marathi Rang Bhumi Din by entire theatre community. On this day in 1843 i.e. 174 years ago Vishnudas Bhave of Sangli had first theatre show called ‘Seeta svyamvar’. Marathi theatre has played a great role in shaping the minds of individuals and in development of society. This day recalls the importance of Marathi theatre, he added.

Earlier, the programmes started with ‘Panchatund Narrund Maladhar Parvatish Aadhi Namito’, a Nandi from Sangeet Shakuntal presented by Narayan Joshi. Children Mrunmayee Mohril and Swara Thengdi conducted the programme.

‘Shyamchi Aai’, first Marathi film to win Golden Lotus Award
Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre, a legendary writer and activist once said about ‘Shyamchi Aai’ as “A sacred hymn of divine mother’s love, came out of the overwhelmed heart of Sane Guruji.” Atre also made a film on ‘Shyamchi Aai’ and the movie became the first Marathi movie to win the Golden Lotus Award (Swarna Kamal) for Best Film at the National Film Awards (President’s Gold Medal) for the All India Best Feature Film. Unfortunately, the programme organised by Dhadpad Manch to observe death centenary of Shyamchi Aai received poor response from Marathi people in city. Barring few old age persons and non Marathi media persons, Marathi people have showed disinterest in Shyamchi Aai which was a very sad picture.
