Staff Reporter,

In a major action against roadside hawkers, traffic control branch, Chamber II, on Monday removed 32 hawkers from busy Sitabuldi and Jhansi Rani Square of city.
According to police, the action begun at 11 am. Staff of traffic police surveyed the area first and then started seizure of the material of the hawkers. The tough police action panicked the hawkers and many of them fled with their material. However, the cops succeeded in seizing goods of 32 hawkers and later issued Chalan to them.
After removing the hawkers, cops barricaded the footpaths and other roadside areas with ropes in order to permanently rule out re-entry of encroachers.

Recently, the High Court also clearly held that hawkers have no right to carry on their business in a non-hawking zone. Besides, there has to be balance between the rights of the hawkers to conduct their vending business on streets and rights of pedestrians to walk on the footpaths and the citizens to use the roads for plying the vehicles, the High Court has noted. Infact, directions to clear the footpaths for pedestrians were issued umpteen times by the High Court in the past.

Senior Police Inspector and in-charge of Chamber II, Jayesh Bhandarkar, informed that the action would continue to make the road free from menace of hawkers. The drive was conducted to make footpaths free for walkers. It would also solve traffic congestion problem in the busy market area of the city, he stated. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ravindrasingh Pardeshi said that it would be difficult for chain snatchers to rob a footpath walker. “We are aiming to clear all footpaths from encroachment,” he said.

Under the guidance of Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr K Venkatesham, the anti-encroachment operation conducted by PI Bhandarkar, PI Ashok Meshra, API Lingurkar, PSI Kurewad, Sarode and others.
