6 including woman Naxal gunned down

The ongoing Anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh got a major boost on Tuesday when the Security forces eliminated six Naxalites including a woman Naxalite, in two simultaneous encounters that took place at insurgency-hit Narainpur district. Addressing mediapersons on this issue Special Director General (Anti Naxal Operations) Durgesh Madhav Awasthi said five Maoist elements were gunned down during an encounter at Pinka village, the woman Maoist was eliminated also in another encounter at Dhurbeda forests, both under restive Narainpur district.

Awasthi further informed the media persons that the security forces recovered nine weapons, including two .303 rifles and large number of Naxal materials and literatures during both these operations. Both the operations were taken place in the interiors of Abhujmad area, considered Maoist hotbed, he added.

The DG (ANO) further informed that the Security forces involved in the encounters were a composite squad of Chhattisgarh Police’s Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite unit – CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), involving around 2000 personnel, which had launched the operation called ‘Prahaar-2’ in the Maoists hotbeds in Bastar region, since yesterday.

The operations have been launched simultaneously in all Maoist hotbeds situated in all seven districts, he said.
Awasthi informed that a joint team of STF, DRG and district force led by Narainpur Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Soni was carrying out combing operations in core forest areas under Abhujmad region. When the operations were undergoing near Dhurbeda this morning, the security forces came under heavy fire from a group of armed Maoists, leading to strong retaliation by the security forces.

After the gun-battle stopped, the forces recovered a body of a woman Maoist along with weapons. Later in the afternoon, five Maoists were killed in another exchange of fire between security forces and Maoists near Pinka. Two .303 rifle, five .315 bore rifles, one 12 bore gun and one pistol were also recovered in the two encounters, he added.
The identity of the killed Maoists were yet to be established as the operation is sill still underway in the region and will conclude by tomorrow, he said. Awasthi informed that with today’s encounters, 63 Maoists have been killed in different encounters with security forces this year in Chhattisgarh, he added. He further informed that the security forces have successfully busted many Maoists’ camps and recovered huge quantity of explosives and materials used in making firearms from forests in Sukma region bordering Telangana, he said.

It is worth mentioning here that the Chhattisgarh police in June this year had launched Operation Prahaar during which it had claimed to have inflicted heavy damage on Maoists in Sukma district.

However, body of only one Maoist was recovered during that operation. In view of the success of the Operation Prahaar, its second part has been launched across Bastar now, added Awasthi.
