RAIPUR,

DOZENS of Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were injured in a clash between them during the
protest organised by the Congress to mark first anniversary of demonetisation.

The trouble started when Chhattisgarh Congress In-charge P L Punia, Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupesh Baghel, former Union Minister of State Dr Charan Das Mahant and other leaders were participating in a demonstration to observe the first anniversary of demonetisation as “Black Day” at Pahadi Chowk, Gudhiyari.
When Baghel’s speech was going on, BJP workers reached the dharna site and threw bangles at Congress workers. Congress workers threw back the bangles at BJP workers. Tension prevailed as BJP workers started pelting stones at Congress workers, injuring many of them. Congress workers had to use chairs to shield their senior leaders. When the situation was going out of control, police resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse the mob. BJP workers also attempted showing black flag to P L Punia and Bhupesh Baghel. Congress also staged a dharna at Rajiv Gandhi Chowk. P L Punia, Bhupesh Baghel, Dr Charan Das Mahant, Mayor Pramod Dubey, Satyanarayan Sharma, Vikas Upadhyay, Daulat Rohra, Gyanesh Sharma, Rajesh Tiwari, Ezaz Dhebar, Vikas Tiwari, Ghanshyam Raju Tiwari, Arun Bhadra and other leaders participated in the protest. A candle march was taken out by Congress leaders at Ambedkar Chowk to pay tributes to the people who lost their lives due to demonetisation.

Addressing the dharna, Punia alleged that BJP leaders had prior knowledge about the Government’s intention and deposited huge money in banks before November 8. Punia accused that the demonetisation move had broken the backbone of the country’s economy. He added that black money continues to exist in the economy due to the failed implementation of the policies and excessive Government regulations. Baghel said that the move led to the deaths of over a hundred people, closure of thousands of small industrial units and resulted in economic slowdown in the country. Later, talking to media persons, Punia said that the Congress would lodge a complaint against the BJP workers with the police.

Vehemently criticising the act of Congress workers, Bharatiya Janata Party Raipur (Urban) President Rajiv Agrawal said the planned attack on BJP workers by Congress party workers with stones and lathis has been done at the instigation of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupesh Baghel.

Agrawal stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party workers were peacefully demonstrating in support of Anti Black-money day. But all of a sudden the Congress party workers suddenly started hurling abuses and instigating slogans against the BJP and its leaders. To this the BJP workers retaliated by rising anti Congress slogans. Enraged with the BJP offensive, the Congress workers started pelting stones on BJP workers injuring many. The BJP women wing also attempted to present bangles to the CPCC President to mark their protest against the stone pelting incident.

The Congress workers continued their hooliganism inflicting injuries on BJP workers. While several party workers received head injuries, one women party worker’s hand was fractured. Later the BJP registered an FIR against the Congress workers and demanded stern action against them.
