The homoeopathic system of medicine in India has become a household name due to the safety of its pills and gentleness of its cure. Homoeopathy is presently a rapidly growing system and its presence can be seen across the world. Still, in India, homoeopathic practitioners are struggling to establish this system of medicine as a complete solution to assure treatment of different ailments. The Hitavada Senior Journalist Rajendra Diwe who attended 25th National Silver Jubilee Homoeopathic Congress held in Chennai Trade Centre’s convention hall in the first week of December, reports on the views of experts.

THIS is the pledge by the homoeopathic physicians across the country and from other parts of the world gathered for the 25th National Silver Jubilee Homoeopathic Congress held in Chennai Trade Centre’s convention hall in the first week of December.

Since its first existence in India in 1810, homoeopathy in India has come a very long way in past 207 years. This system has faced a number of objections from the practitioners of modern medicine. The modern system of medicine commonly termed as allopathic system is strong in all respects. The most common allegation of allopathic system about homoeopathic system is the system is without any science in it. Also the modern medicine practitioners always laugh at the patients who take homoeopathic medicines by terming it as a placebo. Despite these allegations and mockery, ‘the small, tiny sweet pills’ of homoeopathy medicines continue to sell and grow in India.

The 25th Silver Jubilee Congress of Homoeopathic Physicians organised by Indian Institute of Homoeopathy Physicians (IIHP) is successful in addressing the issues, problems and challenges being faced by homoeopathy practitioners in India. Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) is an apex research organisation under Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India which undertakes, co-ordinates, develops, disseminates and promotes scientific research in Homoeopathy. A CCRH team consisting of its Director General and eight Research officers from various Research Centres in India, The Vice-President of CCH Dr Arun Bhasme, the former President of CCH Dr S P S Bakshi, the Director General of CCRH Dr R K Manchanda, Dr Alok Pareek Prime President of LMHI, CCH Members Dr N Srinivasa Rao of Telangana, Dr L K Nanda from Orissa, Dr Vinod Sangwan from Haryana, Dr Nandini Sharma from Delhi, Dr Pankaj Sharma from Rajasthan. In addition to above, Dr Lalit Verma former Secretary CCH, Dr V R Kaviswar, Dean, Faculty of Homoeopathy Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Dr Girish Gupta, Secretary General AHML, Dr Sandeep Kaila, Secretary, Liga India and few Members from Torgau House, Germany, attended the conference.

Dr K S Ratnakar, Chairman of Global Hospitals who is an ardent lover of Homoeopathy was the Key note speaker at the inaugural function. In all, there were 54 Resource persons who have presented their papers in this conference that includes scientists, academicians and researchers. The scientific sessions were conducted in two halls simultaneously to accommodate large number of speakers. Andhra Pradesh State branch conducted a quiz programme for the benefit of students. A souvenir comprising abstracts, articles, two booklets containing the life history of Dr Samuel Hahnemann and late Padmashree Dr K G Saxena and a CD consisting of history of Homoeopathy and IIHP were released at the inaugural function. A book on Homoeopathic evidence based research on Gynaecological disorders written by Dr Girish Gupta of Lucknow was also released at the hands of the Chief Guest.

On this occasion, Dr Ramanlal P Patel of Vadodara, Dr Francisco E Negro the grand old Homoeopaths of India and Italy were conferred with Padmashree Dr K G Saxena’s Lifetime Achievement awards. IIHP had also felicitated Dr S P S Bakshi, former President CCH, Dr Alok Pareek, Prime President LMHI, former Preident CCH, Dr. Chaturbhuj Nayak, former DG CCRH, Dr R K Manchanda, Director General CCRH, Dr J Rameshwar Rao, Chairman of JIMS, Hyderabad, and Chairman of Maha Cement and well known Homoeopathic Philanthropist, Dr V R Kavishwar, Dean, Faculty of Homoeopathy, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Dr Niranjan Mohanty, Prof Emeritus, Dr Jawahar Shah of Mumbai, Kuldeep Jain of B Jain Publisher, Delhi, Dr Manish, Bhartiya Managing Editor of Vital Informer, Dr R Kumaresan, eminent Homoeopath of Chennai, Rajendra Diwe, Health Journalist, with Excellence Awards. We have also felicitated 6 CCH Members who are life Members of IIHP with appreciation awards.

Dr M A Rao: National President of Indian Institute of Homoeopathy Physicians (IIHP): “Homoeopathy should always be the first line of treatment for all chronic diseases and common ailments. The current trend in India indicates homoeopathic physicians are leading towards this goal,” said Dr M A Rao, National President of IIHP.

Expressing concern over recognition of homoeopathic physicians in India, Dr Rao pointed out, “It is a paradox, then when we have to go through five years rigorous course after completing HSSC (12th standard) with science stream, some people call us quacks and what we are doing is only a placebo therapy. Of course, it pains when there is negative publicity in advanced countries about homoeopathy. If you say, it is placebo effect when the patient becomes all right with the administration of homoeopathic remedy, let it be a placebo effect. If you think placebo is so effective, then why don’t you also administer your placebo capsule and see the results? Why administer drugs costing thousands of rupees for just a migraine? The day is not very far when so called modern medicine drug industry will be on the streets yelling against homoeopathy looking at their popularity or coolly start manufacturing homoeopathic drugs.”

Padmashree Dr V K Gupta, President of Honour IIHP: “Despite the motivated criticism by money driver forces of the Western countries where Homoeopathy has not been institutionalised, Homoeopathy is getting popular in the entire world. According to a recent survey report by Indian Market Research Bureau in 2016, 59 per cent of the patients have been shifted from Allopathy to Homoeopathy in metropolitan cities of India,” said Padmashree Dr V K Gupta.

According to the World Health Organisation, Homoeopathy is the fastest growing and the second most popular system of medicine in the world. Homoeopathic industry in Europe is valued at around one billion Euro in 2015 with an annual growth rate of around six per cent, he added. The growth rate of sale of Homoeopathic medicines in India is 26.3 per cent annually in past years, he said by quoting the recent Ayush data.

Stating a good medical education is the backbone of every system of medicine; Dr Gupta also expressed the need to admit students to undergraduate courses strictly on All India merit basis as it has been done for post graduate courses. University Grants Commission (UGC) grades should be provided to all the teachers to attract capable and competent teachers for Homoeopathic colleges. All the Homoeopathic colleges in the country may be categorised, keeping in view their infrastructure, manpower and quality of education. These steps will create a healthy competition among colleges to improve their quality of education, he said.

“India has largest number of institutionally qualified practitioners in the world, but their participation in research is very limited. These practitioners of Homoeopathy are treating a very large number of patients in their day to day practice. But the success stories of these practitioners of Homoeopathy could not be published in large numbers in reputed journals due to non-adherence to submission guidelines. Now the Homoeopathic practitioner can follow ‘HOM-CASE’-CARE guidelines Developed and published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine by Dr Van Haselen. Any case report in such a format will be accepted by any peer reviewed Journal and that will help to bring credibility to the useful effect of Homoeopathic drug intervention that is to find out cause-effect relationship,” Dr Gupta stated. He appealed to practitioners to validate characteristic symptoms of Homoeopathic Medicines in different disease entities as a part of prognostic factor research. These efforts will help to link clinical practice with research for consolidating the scientific framework of Homoeopathy.

“We must create an epidemic cell in each State comprising a team of dedicated Homoeopathic practitioners who shall get in action immediately at the onset of an epidemic and would collect characteristic symptoms of the patients at the time of the invasion, during the peak and recovery period of the patients. This useful information should be shared quickly with the epidemic cell at the HQ of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, thus, a GENUS EPIDEMICUS is selected, well in time, for the ultimate benefit to the community. The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy has made a very encouraging beginning in this direction. Presently, more than 10 million are under the ambit of Homoeopathy in public health and rural health care,” Dr Gupta mentioned.

Prof Dr S Praveen Kumar: Homoeopathy has a potential to cure HIV. During the recent research work, several patients with HIV AIDS have been cured from this disease, claimed Prof Dr S Praveen Kumar, Principal, JSPSGHMC Hyderabad. We have treated over ten thousand patients and out of them, eight patients have already turned negative for HIV, he added

“Crotalus horridus is the drug used to treat HIV. This drug is made out of the venom of timber rattlesnake. The drug is not new and has been in use in homoeopathy for the last 200 years. It can reportedly be used to treat the Ebola virus as well as HIV and works by inhibiting the enzyme reverse transcriptase — which helps convert RNA into DNA thus preventing multiplication of the virus,” explained Dr S Praveen Kumar, the man behind the discovery.

A team of doctors from the hospital and scientists from the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, held 16 meetings in two years and came up with a regimen for the drug with the latest guidelines of CD4 count (a predictor of HIV progression) of less than 500 as a benchmark.

Dr Raj K Manchanda, Director General of Central Council for Research in Homeopathy CCRH), under Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India: “CCRH has started fundamental research in Homoeopathy. Though a number of projects have been conducted so far, yet much is to be achieved in this field,” Dr Raj K Manchanda said.
“We need more and more research to further identify the pathway of action of Homoeopathic medicine. Keeping in view the merits of Homoeopathy, the need of the hour is to unfold the full potential of Homoeopathy in community health medicine, rural health care and National Health Programmes,” he added.

“With its headquarters in New Delhi, the CCRH is conducting multi-centric research through a network of 23 institutes or units across the country. CCRH has objectives to formulate the aims and patterns of research on scientific lines in Homoeopathy. It has initiated, developed, undertaken and co-ordinated scientific research in fundamental and applied aspects of Homoeopathy. It is exchanging information with other institutions, associations and societies interested in the objectives similar to those of the Council. CCRH has collaborated research studies with other Institutes of Excellence towards promotion of Homoeopathy and propagated research findings through monographs, journals, newsletters, I.E.&C. materials, seminars/workshops and develop audio-visual aids for dissemination of information to the profession and public,” Dr Manchanda stated.

The research activities of the council include ‘Survey, collection and cultivation of medicinal plants,’ ‘Drug standardisation’, ‘Drug proving,’ ‘Clinical verification’ and ‘Clinical research.’ Other than these, the Council is also affianced in fundamental and basic research; public health programmes of national importance; health melas, he added.

Dr Muktinder Singh, Director of Homoeocare Ludhiana: “Homoeopathy is a spiritual science. This is the art of healing par excellence,” said a senior homoeopath and a great mentor in homoeopathic education. Dr Muktinder Singh who is also a known name on national and international circle.

“More and more people are suffering from serious and complicated diseases. Despite the tremendous success claimed by modern medicine, human being is still suffering from incurable diseases. Cure eludes a simple disease like allergy. Modern medicines are ‘controlling’ the disease hence, we term allopathy as controllo-pathy,” Dr Muktinder Singh stated.

Dr Muktinder Singh has a vast experience of handling acute and chronic cases. He proved himself many times by treating incurable cases successfully. He dealt with cases of cancer, auto immune disorders, psychiatric cases and pediatric pathologies. He has promoted homeopathy successfully and has the credit of establishing many clinics in North India. Along with homeopathy, his religious and spiritual faith has helped him to emerge as a great councillor. His treatment not only cures the disease but also helps patients evolve as better human beings.

“The father of Homoeopathy, Dr. Hahnemann, who himself was an allopathic postgraduate, was frustrated with the then prevalent mode of treatment and felt a strong need for regeneration in medicine. He discovered this fantastic science and since then, thousands of ailing patients are benefited with this system. In the great majority of cases, the fundamental cause of disease is the predisposition of the individual to be sick. The imbalance, which is the disease state, is in fact only the expression of this predisposition to be sick. With the right homeopathic remedy, the organism re-balances itself globally so that the tendency to be sick is greatly decreased. The homeopathic medicine can get at the root of your state and balance it, which manifests in a healing on all levels,” Dr Muktinder Singh stated.

“In order to accurately perceive what is to be observed in patients, we should direct all our thoughts on the matter we have in hand, come out of ourselves, and as it were, fasten ourselves, so to speak, with all our powers of concentration upon it, in order that nothing that is actually present, that has to do with the subject and that can be ascertained by all the senses, may escape us,” he said.
