Indo-UK Institute of Health (IUIH), one of the world’s largest healthcare projects with an investment of Rs 17,600 crore in India, commenced development of its Medicity in Multimodal International Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN)-Special Economic Zone (SEZ) here on Tuesday.

The Medicity coming up in MIHAN-SEZ is the first of 11 Medicities to be developed by IUIH in 11 Indian states. In August earlier this year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had unveiled the foundation stone for the Nagpur Medicity. Suresh Kakani, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), performed bhoomipujan of IUIH Medicity in MIHAN-SEZ on Tuesday. Pardeep Sood, Vice-President (Infrastructure), IUIH; and Dr Rajdeep Singh Chhina, Chief Operations Officer, IUIH, also were present prominently on the occasion.

IUIH Medicity Nagpur is proposed to be the central logistics hub of supply chain for all 11 IUIH Medicities in India. “We are in talks with 40 NASDAQ listed companies that are our partners in this project. IUIH Medicity Nagpur will become the manufacturing site for medical equipment as well, in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ programme,” said Vinay Singhal, Board Member, IUIH. Centres of Excellence for cutting-edge medical research are proposed to be set up in IUIH Medicity Nagpur and the focus shall be on clinical research analysing the patient data, genetics and stem cells.

According to Suresh Kakani, “We have been working very closely with IUIH team. Clearances that generally take longer are being fast tracked for them. We have also offered them office space on rent in our premises such that the travel time is curtailed. Technical teams are interacting on regular basis to speed up the work.”

Dr Ajay Rajan Gupta, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of IUIH said, “The first phase of Medicity was slated to come up in three years. However, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis want this to be fast tracked, we shall be ready with a 250-bed hospital by 2019 itself.”

Krupal Tumane, Member of Parliament from Ramtek, hoped that when all three phases of IUIH Medicity Nagpur were complete within 12 years, direct and indirect employment for 2,00,000 people would be generated. According to Dr Rajdeep Singh Chhina, IUIH has tied up with IT majors for big data analytics.

“Our e-Health and m-Health platforms, to be ready in the first phase itself, will facilitate exchange of patients’ medical records electronically using telemedicine, tele-radiology and tele-pathology for diagnostics etc. IUIH believes in covering the last mile across the neighbouring villages and taking healthcare services down to patient’s doorstep,” he said.

Pardeep Sood thanked State Government, especially MADC, for ‘phenomenal support’. Dr Ajay Rajan Gupta said that IUIH Medicity Nagpur intended to outscore domestic competition by offering procedures at 30 per cent less than the prevailing rates. “NHS standard healthcare at lower price points will be our winning formula to tap the medical tourism business potential,” he added.
