Opposing the examination fee hike proposals of Barkatullah University (BU), National Students Union of India (NSUI) staged protest in campus on Thursday. The university Vice Chancellor Pramod Verma interacted with the demonstrators and assured to take back the proposal of fee hike. In its Executive Council meet, university proposed examination fee hike. The university has planned 25 per cent fee increment in semester and 50 per cent fee hike for the annual exam. The university fee committee has submitted proposal for the examination fee hike.

BU fee committee includes dean and senior officials. However every year university makes maximum 10 per cent fee increment proposals. This is the first time when BU officials have proposed 50 percent fee increment. At present Undergraduate and Postgraduate students submit Rs 2,700 for the two semester examination in a year. After implementing fee increment as per the proposal, they will be to submit additional Rs 675.

Students who have been admitted for the annual examination pattern will be submitting Rs 3000 for the exam.

Their fee charges are almost double to the semester candidates. University professors said BU has not increased it examination fee for many times and it is now important to take some decision of the fee hike. Professors said management should roll in fee hike but it should be 10 to 20 per cent maximum. Few Professors said students from economically weaker background are in higher number in BU so there should not be such a big fee hike.

University registrar UN Shukla said, committee has been formed to check the examination fee of all courses. The committee’s proposal will be presented before EC members and final decision would be taken. Registrar Shukla said final decision will be taken by EC members with detailed discussion and it will be in favour of students only.

The Department of Higher Education (DHE) has recently roll in annual examination pattern in universities and colleges across state. Freshly admitted students for the Undergraduate courses will be giving their examination in annual pattern and they will not go through the semester pattern. When proposal for annual exam pattern was given by DHE, most of universities raised question for the fee hike.

They said in annual exam pattern universities have to charge more amounts from students to cope up with the expenditure.
