Opposing the suppressing act upon Shikshakarmis by the State Government, the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee has called Chhattisgarh Maha Bandh on December 5. The announcement was made by CPCC President Bhupesh Baghel, while he had gone to meet the striking Shikshakarmis on Saturday. It is worth mentioning here that the Teachers (Panchayat), also called Shikshakarmi, are on strike since last 13 days for their nine-point demands. There had been strong resentment among the Shikshakarmis as the State Government is adamant towards its stand and not considering their plight.

The CPCC President alleged that on Saturday, the Shikshakarmis had decided to demonstrate in the capital along with their family members. However, the police had arrested them from roads and villages while they were proceeding towards the Capital. He also alleged that many cases of police high-handedness and misbehavior particularly with female members had come to fore.

Opposing the suppression and atrocities on over 1.80 lakh Shikshakarmis by the State Government, CPCC President Bhupesh Baghel along with former Minister Mohammed Akbar, Congress Raipur President Vikas Upadhyay, State Spokesperson Mahendra Chabda, former MLA Kuldeep Juneja, Mahila Congress President Phulodevi Netam and others visited the venue and participated in Dharna. Women Shikshakarmis and family members of male shiksharkarmis on the occasion informed the CPCC President about the ill-treatment meted against them by the police personnel. They also alleged that their leaders were arrested by police from their houses.

Enraged Shikshakarmis said, they are not criminals and are demonstrating for their rights. They also stated that mobiles, social media apps, etc are not functioning at the dharnasthal, loud speakers were seized by the district administration so that striking Shikshakarmis fail to communicate with others.

On hearing the plight and mistreatment accorded to the Shikshakarmis, CPCC President Bhupesh Baghel called for Chhattisgarh Maha-Bandh on Tuesday in support of the Shikshakarmis. He also called upon on Congress members and office-bearers at the district and state level to come forward in support of Shikshakarmis. He said it is not improper to demonstrate for the demands and it is a part of democratic agitation. The BJP government has failed to fulfill the promises made in its election manifesto and that the Congress will fight for Shikshakarmi up to the last moment.
