Staff Reporter,

MEMBERS of Nagrik Upbhokta Margdarshak Manch (NUMM) demanded CBI probe in LED bulbs scam and sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Energy Ministry’s Energy Efficiency Services Limited distributed around 28 crore LED bulbs worth Rs 20 billions on subsidised rates to domestic consumers under the head of Ujwala Yojana till December 19, 2017. Similarly, private players distributed 52.43 crore LED bulbs worth Rs 39 billion till October 2017.

NUMM Regional Convenor Manish Sharma informed that a study conducted by Neilson revealed 76 per cent of LED
bulbs distributed on subsidised rates to consumers are fake or faulty.

According to Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), taking cognisance of report of Neilson, Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturing Association of India (ELCONA) lodged a complaint of imported and indigenously manufactured inferior quality of LED bulbs to Industrial Policy and Development, Commercial and Industry Ministry.

NUMM’s Dr Rakesh Chakrawarty, Anurag Dongre, Rammilan Sharma, Piyush Sen, Dhananjay Majumda and others charged that the disclosure in report shrouds mystery behind authenticity of LED bulbs being distributed across the country.
This irregularity is not possible without involvement of departments related to Bureau of Indian Standards, Vigilance Wing, distributors and manufacturers. LED bulbs are approved after laboratory test as per guidelines of Bureau of Indian Standards under supervision of Electronics and Information Technology Ministry.

They pressed demand before Prime Minister Narendra Modi for constituting a special team for further investigations into the case or handing over investigation to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
