4,000 cops to keep watch on revellers

Flyovers to remain closed for traffic from Sunday evening

Around 4,000 police personnel will be on toes from evening of December 31 till early hours of January 1 to ensure safe and peaceful New Year celebrations across city. Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr K Venkatesham appealed to citizens to follow traffic rules and avoid indulging in anti-social activities during the revelry. To ensure safety during the celebrations, the city police have planned a massive drive against drunken driving from 10 pm of December 31 till early hours of January 1.

“For this year’s drive, we will be taking help of 2,010 CCTV cameras of Smart City Project with recording capacity of 15 days and also public announcement systems at 52 places. We have large number of check points across the city. Latest breath analyzers will also be utilised,” said Dr K Venkatesham.

Based on the rigorous drive against drunk driver implemented during previous New Year celebrations, the city police have prepared a database of about 50,000 persons. The cops will keep a close watch on them identified as habitual offenders. The Commissioner of Police has appealed to the New Year revellers to refrain from drunken driving and ensure their own safety as well as of the others.

According to a communiqué issued by city police, Shahid Govari flyover Sitabuldi, Sakkardara flyover, Kamal talkies flyover, Mehandibag flyover, Jaripatka Marti Nagar bridge will remain closed for traffic from Sunday evening. Similarly, traffic movement will be barred from Law College square to Shankar Nagar square also from Sunday evening.
