Ambulance driver too fled the spot

IN A ghastly mishap, four persons, including a 12-year-old boy and his mother, were killed and five of their relatives injured, three of them seriously, after a speeding truck collided head-on with an ambulance near Eight Milestone on Amravati Road in Wadi in the wee hours of Monday. The driver of the ‘killer’ truck sped away. Fearing trouble, the ambulance driver also ran away leaving his vehicle on the spot.


The deceased have been identified as Aakash Rameshwar Bhalerao (12), Vimal Rameshwar Bhalerao (30), Shriram Mahadeo Dharpawar (40), all residents of Agar, Akola, and Pramod Digambar Band (34), a resident of Lad Umri, district Akola.


Injured Laxmi Kisna Bawne (35), Ishwar Mohan Mudgal (24), Kisna Ambadas Bawne (45), Ambadas Rajaram Bawne, and Rameshwar Janrao Bhalerao (34), who are also residents of Agar in Akola district, were rushed to Mayo Hospital.


According to Police, Aakash Bhalerao and Laxmi Kisna Bawne were injured after they were hit by an auto-rickshaw in Agar in Akola district. The doctors referred them to Mayo Hospital in Nagpur. Their family members hired an ambulance (MH-41/G-4742) to shift them to Nagpur for treatment.


Around 10.30 pm on Sunday, they started for Nagpur from Akola. Around 3.30 am on Monday, a rashly-driven truck heading towards Amravati direction collided head-on with the ambulance in front of Power House gate at Eight Milestone in Wadi killing Aakash Bhalerao, his mother Vimal Bhalerao, Shriram Dharpawar and Pramod Band on the spot and injuring Laxmi Bawne, Ishwar Mudgal, Kisna Bawne, Ambadas Bawne and Rameshwar Bhalerao. The truck driver sped away.


Sensing trouble, the ambulance driver, who sustained some injuries, also fled the spot.
Staff from Wadi Police Station arrived at the spot. With the assistance of some passers-by, cops extricated the bodies from the mangled ambulance.
A portion of the mangled steel was cut to remove the injured persons. Police rushed the injured persons to the hospital and also sent the bodies for post-mortem.


Wadi Police recorded the statement of injured Rameshwar Bhalerao and registered an offence under Sections 279 (Rash driving on a public way), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 ( Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304A (Causing deaths by negligence), 427. Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees or upwards) of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 184 (Driving dangerously) of Motor Vehicle Act against the
truck driver.
