Bravo! Crime rate in city shows a decline

City’s crime rate was 441.1/lakh in year 2015, it declined to 392.9/lakh in year 2016 with 29.8 lakh population

 


 

 

Pro-active policing and stern preventive action against criminals had borne fruits as crime rate has decreased in year 2016, reveals the statistic released by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB). The decrease is measured in relative terms, referring to crime per lakh population. While the crime rate was 441.1/lakh in year 2015, it declined to 392.9/lakh, means a reduction of 48.2/lakh.


As per the annual report of NCRB, 10,359 crime cases under Indian Penal Code (IPC) were reported in city in the year 2014 with a crime rate of 414.7/lakh. The crime rate had jumped to 441.1/lakh in year 2015 with 11,018 IPC cases. Population of Nagpur Police Commissionerate was 25 lakh during the year 2014 and 2015 respectively. In the year 2016, the crime rate has slumped to 392.9/lakh with registration of 11,711 IPC cases. Population of the Police Commissionerate rose to 29.8 lakh after addition of three police stations -- Hingna, Old Kamptee and New Kamptee.


In Special and Local Laws (SLL) cases, which are the indicator of pro-active policing and preventive action, the Nagpur Police touched all time high with massive 31,155 cases in year 2016. In year 2014 and 2015 17,307 and 22,095 SLL cases were registered respectively. Out of total 31,155 SLL cases, 85.97 per cent (26,784) cases related to drunken driving, and 374 were Arms Act cases, 59 cases were under The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 1,067 were Gambling cases, 1,508 Prohibition cases, 125 Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) cases, eight Essential Commodities Act (EC) cases while 1,188 were other SLL cases.


Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr. K. Venkatesham said that thrust on the preventive action had helped to put check on the growing crime statistics of the Commissionerate. The city police establishment and especially constabulary force had taken enormous efforts to keep check on the anti-social elements, the city police chief said while applauding the efforts of ground force.


On the issue of increase in number of SLL cases, the Police Commissioner said that the city police had intensified action against drinkers and number of drunken drive cases doubled in year 2016. This action had helped the police to arrest the rising road accidents and fatalities in city.

 

Pune third while Nagpur fifth in violent crimes

Nagpur stood fifth in 2016 among metropolitan cities (more than 20 lakh population) in terms of incidents of violent crimes like murder, kidnapping and abduction, and others. NCRB has first time added separate head for violent crime in Crime In India report, recognising the new trend. As per the report, total 1,644 violent crimes were reported in city with rate of 55.1 per lakh population. Pune ranks three with violent crime rate of 60.7 per lakh population.

Patna city topped the chart of violent crime with rate of 221.8. In year 2016, 92 murder cases were reported in city which shows a decline in the trend as compared to figures of previous years and upward trend if compared to figure of year 2015. The city witnessed total 103 murder cases in year 2014, 107 in year 2013, 92 in year 2012, 120 in year 2011 and 104 in year 2010.
