ARMED forces are on high alert to avert cyber menace and released advisory for Army and paramilitary forces to avoid use of Chinese mobile applications. Defence personnel have been suggested to abort use of Chinese spyware like True Caller, Weibo, WeChat, UC News, UC Browser, Baidu Maps etc. Use of these applications by security personnel is vulnerable to data security pertaining to force and national security.

The advisory has been released in wake of inputs received by Union Home Ministry from intelligence agencies. The advisory says, “As per reliable inputs, a number of android/IOS apps developed by Chinese developers or having Chinese links are reportedly either spyware or other malicious ware. Use of these apps by our armed personnel can be detrimental to data security having implications on the force and national security.”

Madhya Bharat Area Spokesman Colonel B P Singh, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, informed that armed forces personnel have been advised to uninstall Chinese spyware apps and format their cell phones to protect their official and personal data available in phones. It is not the first time when armed forces have been given such directives as it is a routine practice to keep Army personnel vigilant while using online mobile applications to evade threat of cyber attack, he added.

There are several incidences of hacking websites of Government departments and stealing sensitive data in the country. Use of sensitive mobile applications and sharing online information is always sensitive for its disclosure. Use of these applications is not only vulnerable to leak defence related information but also sensitive to misuse of personal information for individuals and institutions. Rampant use of android cell phones also increases threat of cyber attack in the country. Along with defence personnel, common people should also avoid use of sensitive mobile applications to protect their personal data and their contribution to the security of nation.
