Inter-state racket in sale-purchase of babies suspected

Cops obtain two-day PCR of the accused couple

DHANTOLI Police have arrested a couple for allegedly purchasing a 12-day-old baby from her poor mother by promising to pay her Rs 50,000.
Accused Manish Surajratan Mundada (36) and his wife Harsha Mundada (32), approached Mona Avinash Barsagde (26), a resident of Wadi, who was pregnant, through a woman named Bharati. The couple struck a deal with her to purchase the baby for Rs 50,000. After initial hesitation, Mona accepted the offer.

On November 22, when Mona delivered a girl child, the accused took away the baby.
However, after a couple of days, Mona repented her act and approached police to get back the baby.

Acting on her complaint, cops arrested the accused couple who were residing at Senapati Nagar, Dighori. An offence under Sections 506 (Criminal Intimidation) , 370 (Trafficking of persons) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act has been registered against them.

Cops produced Manish Mundada and Harsha Mundada before a JMFC Court and obtained two-day remand for their custodial interrogation.

A senior officer told ‘The Hitavada’ that police are investigating the case from all possible angles and trying to trace the person(s) to whom the accused sold Mona’s baby.
Police are also trying to trace accused Bharati, who was the mediator between the accused couple and Mona.

Meanwhile, the couple claimed that it was a case of surrogacy and that they run a surrogacy centre. However, they could not produce legal documents to justify their claim.

Police suspect that the accused could be involved in an inter-state racket for purchasing infants from poor mothers and selling them to issueless married couples in different parts of the country.
