Five women among seven Naxals killed in Gadchiroli

SEVEN Naxalites including five women members were killed in an encounter that took place between the police and the Naxals on Wednesday morning in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.

The skirmish took place at around 5.30 am in a forest in Kalled village, about 15 kms north of Zinganur police station in Sironcha tehsil of Gadchiroli, when a squad of Maharashtra police’s special anti-Maoist unit was out on an anti-Naxal operation. This is considered to be the major blow to the Naxal movement in the district which had created quite havoc in the past few days. The Naxalites had killed two policemen and five civilians in the period of past fortnight due to which quite a terror had spread in the district.

The senior police officers have been personally conducting combing operations in sensitive parts for the last four five days under the monitoring senior most police authorities.
The police had got a tip off that the Naxals were camping in the Kallod forest upon which police of the C 60 Commando Force swung into action and reached the spot at around 5.30 am on Wednesday. On seeing the cops, Naxalites opened fire on them and the security personnel too retaliated in which seven Naxals were killed.

At least two Naxals were also injured but fled after the encounter. Some arms and Naxal material was also found at the spot of this firing. The weapons seized by the police included two SLR rifles, two 303 rifles, two 12 bore guns and one country-made pistol.

Six of the naxalites have been identified by the police. Their names have been given as Aheri Dalam Commander Aytu alais Ashok Pendam (38), a resident of Lingampalli, Sarita Kawande, member of Sironcha Dalam, a resident of Bijapur in Chhattisgarh, Chandu, Asstt.

Commandant, Shaila, Perimili Dalam member, a resident of Pokur in Bhamragad taluka, Akhila Kulmethe, member of Platoon No. 14 member, a resident of Kapewancha in Aheri taluka, Sunita Kodape, Sironcha Dalam Asstt. Commandant, resident of Sindha in Sironcha taluka, according to police.
One naxalite has not yet been identified. The rewards of Rs. 2 lakhs to 8 lakhs were declared for these naxalites.

This was informed by Mr. Sharad Shelar, IG (Anti Naxal Operations) in a press conference this evening in SP office here. Mr. Ankush Shinde, DIG, Gadchiroli Range, Dr. Abhinav Deshmukh, SP, Maheshwar Reddi, Addl. SP were also present in the press conference.

It may be mentioned here that earlier, in 2013, six Naxals were killed in an encounter with police. The Naxalites had launched foundation day of the Peoples Liberation Guerrilla Army Week since December 2 last. They had killed five civilians at different places during the last few days.

Police constable Suresh Gawde and CRPF jawan Manjunath Shiwlingappa were killed by the Naxalites during this period.
D Kanakratna, Additional Director General of Police, and Sharad Shelar, Inspector General of Police, have been camping in the district to monitor the police operations against the Naxalites. Wednesday’s action is considered to be the major one in the recent past. The incident has sent a shockwave among the Naxal cadres. A search operation was underway in the area, police said.
