Special Correspondent,

After successfully completing his term of two-and-a-half years in the office of Mayor, a young and dynamic Pravin Datke looked confident and relaxed, on Saturday, the last day of his term as Mayor.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a splendid victory under his leadership as Mayor of the city. A relaxed Datke was content about what he achieved during his term, and attributed credit for his success to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, his fellow senior corporators and staff of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).

“I am happy that during my tenure as Mayor, Central and State Governments launched several developmental projects in Nagpur. The city is marching ahead on all fronts, especially towards becoming a Smart City,” Datke told reporters on Saturday. At the same time, he said that his dream of organising a national-level marathon competition in the city, and opening a single-window system for sanctioning building plans remained unrealised.

Datke, who has been elected for fourth consecutive term in NMC, is son of late Prabhakar Datke, a BJP veteran. Datke said that Central Government and BJP-Shiv Sena led State Government had given tremendous funds to city in last two years for various developmental works.
The Government grants were pending for last several years but after taking reins of the State, Government under Devendra Fadnavis cleared all dues of last 15 years.
“On financial front, we managed the show of NMC with the help of State Government only. We received Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 1,200 crore in last two years. NMC received Rs 600 crore from Local Body Tax. The local body received Rs 200 crore for cement roads, Rs 300 crore against Government grants, and Rs 74 crore for Suresh Bhat Auditorium being constructed in Reshimbag,” Datke said.

The outgoing Mayor presented a list of achievements and projects during his tenure. Vivekanand Smarak at Ambazari over-flow point as conceptualised by Ruling Party leader Dayashankar Tiwari, sewage treatment plant (STP) for treatment of sewage water made NMC the first municipal corporation in India to sell treated water to power company for thermal power generation, completion of 70 per cent work of 24x7 (uninterrupted) water supply scheme making Nagpur the first model city in the country to implement such project that will help reduce water scarcity during summer.

Besides, almost 4,000 cameras will be connected with CCTV camera surveillance system to make Nagpur smarter, Datke said. The installation of new LED lights will be completed in new financial year. A new Indoor Stadium and badminton court for upcoming sportspersons, national-level Kho-Kho tournament and half-marathon are among the achievements of NMC in the field of sports. ‘Nagpur Mahotsav’, the cultural programme initiated by then Standing Committee chief Sandip Joshi, won accolades across the country, and it has now become a signature event of the city, Datke said. “We are working on Smart City project. Central Government has selected the city in second round. Also, NMC bagged several awards in last five years on various fronts,” he added with pride in his tone.

BJP worked on the belief ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ and it received support of the people and communities from all walks of life, Datke said. He hoped that people would support BJP regime in NMC in future and make NMC’s finances stronger with new tax system to be introduced in future. Almost 187 new buses are on roads after terminating the tender of Vansh Nimay Infra Limited.
Even though the opposition did not participate much in constructive debate in NMC house, Datke said, BJP conducted 29 general body meetings and passed 402 resolutions in last two-and-a-half years. “We also placed contracts and policies in public domain for the citizens to ensure transparency,” he said.
BJP’s Mayoral candidate Nanda Jichkar, outgoing Ruling Party leader Dayashankar Tiwari, new leader Sandip Joshi, Deputy Mayor candidate Deepraj Pardikar, former Standing Committee chiefs Sudhir Raut and Narendra Borkar were present in the press conference.
